Acoustics and Moisture

For those of you who live in the cooler climates it's getting cooler and we need to keep an eye on the humidity to keep our acoustic guitars in good playing condition. Here are a few things I will recommend you do to eliminate any damage to your acoustic guitar.

1. Go buy a guitar case humidifier like a Dampit or the planet wave system. This is a device that stores water and releases it into the air in the guitar case.
2. Go buy a humidity meter. The one I use I bought at Radio Shack. It measures temp. as well as Humidity. Try to keep the guitar case humidity at approx 50%. If the humidity drops down to low the top will sink. This will cause the bridge to either crack.. usually at the pin holes or pull off completely. It can also cause cracks in the top, and braces inside can pop loose causing a lot of unnecessary repairs.
3. Keep your guitar in the case!!! DO NOT LEAVE IT OUT ON A STAND. The case is the safest place to store the guitar, and with these tools you can monitor and control the enviornment the guitar is in!

I own 10 Acoustic guitars, All of them are solid wood guitars. I have a Dampit in the guitar sound hole as well as a travel soap dish with a sponge in it that I keep under the headstock(I have punched holes in this to allow the moisture out). I keep the meter in the accessory compartment, and I check the humidity every other day. The humidity will generally run about 45 to 55 %. It's a simple thing to do and will save you lots of money in repairs.

Re: Acoustics and Moisture

hmmmm i took my acoustic on a camping party with my friends once - great fun! proper singin drunkenly around the campfire type thing. untill it started reeeally raining and i had to sleep with my head touching my feet because i sacrificed most of my place in a 2 man tent (with 4 people in it) for my guitar. it got a little moist, but it cost me £35 and it doesnt seem to have affected it too much! i hope. sigh....memories....sorry when u mentioned acoustics getting wet it brought it all back.
