Acrylic Bodies

What are they like? Do they sound horrible? I was recently thinking of buying a BC Rich Ice Acrylic MockingBird(and swap out the pickups) so I was wondering what the acrylic body will do to tone and what not. Also I know this isnt the pickup forum but what pickups would be best in it?

Re: Acrylic Bodies

they have a pretty hard/cold tone...not much in tha way of warmth, but that said...I dig them. I used to have a Custom acrylic Flying V that belonged to my dad...it had a wooded neck and it has a cool sound...not like anything else really but cool.

Re: Acrylic Bodies

So as far as pickups go a more trebly pickup would be a bad idea in the acrylic? If so an Invader might do the trick?

Re: Acrylic Bodies

I had a Dan Armstrong back in the 70's and it had removable pups.

Nice guitar and it had good tone.

Sold it for a Les Paul Classic. It's now worth much more than that LP Classic.

Rolling Stones used one, but I can not remember which one...

Keith used one, Joe Perry uses one for slide, Dave Grohl uses one, Greg from Black Flag used one with a JB...

The only thing I think about using one with an Invader is that an Invader is kind of mid heave as are Acrlic guitars...but It might be good...The Flying V I had had a Dimarzio PAF in the bridge and a Strat pup in the neck...it sounded pretty good. I say just use whatever kind of pup you wanna use and let the guitar have it's own sound.

Re: Acrylic Bodies

The only thing I dislike about acrylic BC Riches is how heavy they are. Killer tone & sustain, IMHO.

Re: Acrylic Bodies

i hear that they are really HEAVY in weight, but give out awesome tone if ur into the CRUNCH CRUNCH CRUNCH.

Re: Acrylic Bodies

yeah they are like lugging a F-150 Super Duty on your back during a gig my friend says lol. I guess I'll just have to try a bunch of pickups in it and see what I like. Thanx for the info/advice. I'll post again about this if/when I get one and test some pickups in it.

Re: Acrylic Bodies

Yeah I only wanted it to be showy kinda thing...but hey if it sounded good enough I'd use it more often...Save some time going to the gym!

Re: Acrylic Bodies

The one major flaw in those BC Rich acrylics are in the headstocks. They meld acrylic and wood together where the headstsock attaches to the neck. I wouldn't say it's the best idea. I've seen more than one of those headstocks come off. They all have separated where the wood and acrylic meet. I've seen some come in with broken headstocks from only being shipped. I'm not trying to scare you off, It's not like it's every one. Think of it as weaker than a Gibson headstock. You deffinately don't want to drop it. They would be so much better with a fully wooden neck.

Re: Acrylic Bodies

Yes thats definitly something I would want to adress. At gigs Im a little...well I look like an escaped mental patient so I wouldnt want my guitar to fall apart when Im twirlin' about....I could get a replacement neck tho...but thats even more money...this is definitly going to be a "when I win the lotto" projects lol.

Re: Acrylic Bodies

One downside about clear acrylic bodies- no more playing naked and hiding your penge behind your guitar!

Hey- can they custom grind a magnifying clear acrylic body?
