active/passive setup in p/j configuration Hamer cruise bass

Howdy :)

I just played a new Fender USA Pbass deluxe at the local music shop and loved it.

Would it be possible to install a similar system into my 81 Hamer cruise bass?

I would need the correct pickups, wiring harness , pre amp etc. Does SD make these items? Someone else?

The cruise bass is a set neck mahogany 34" scale and I play rock/old school jazz ... no slap bass or funk

Thanks!

Seymour Duncan makes a great active bass preamp system that can be used with your current passive pickups. I've used it before and it's a great pre-amp. IIRC it's the STC-3P by Basslines.

An STC-3P system might need modification. It features controls for Vol., Balance, T, M, B. You might prefer P Vol., J Vol., T, M, B.

How generous is the control cavity on the Hamer? The STC-3P includes a PCB. Will there be room to accept this and a 9v battery?

Bartolini and Aguilar also make fine preamps to turn your bass into a passive/active bass. In fact, you can add a toggle switch and go back and forth from passive to active.

ive been very happy with the duncan preamps ive put in basses. there are a few options but you need to have room to fit them in the cavity

Re: active/passive setup in p/j configuration Hamer cruise bass

Can it be presumed that the OP's instrument is MIK rather than MIA?

In this instance, upgrading to professional quality pickups might bring about sufficient improvement without resorting to active EQ.

For the requested Rock 'n' Jazz tones, the likeliest candidates are:
SD Quarter Pound P and J pair
SD Steve Harris and Hot Stack for J
Bartolini 8S and 9JL #4
EMG PX and JX
SD APJ-1/AJJ-1 Pro Active pair
SD APJ-2/AJJ-2 Lightnin' Rods pair

The large, triangular control cavity plate suggests that there will be plenty of space for any circuit boards and batteries.
