Adding a phase switch

Hi!

I'd like to add an on-off switch for out of phase functionality to my current wiring:

I'd be most grateful for a little help with schematics

Re: Adding a phase switch

Not pretty. But accurate now.

See where I broke two wires, and labeled the ends A and B. Connect those ends to a DPDT switch, where those labels are. Doesn't matter if it's a push-pull or a toggle. They work the same.

Also note, (since I edited the diagram), that the bridge "south start" wire now goes to the parallel push-pull, and then continues on to the phase switch. You can just a run a jumper from the parallel switch to the phase switch. Whatever is easiest. Then, also note that I "broke" the ground connection to the bridge parallel switch. Not the case ground. Just the terminal ground. Make sense?

Re: Adding a phase switch

The phase switch goes after the series/parallel switch.

So you would be swapping the lead that goes to the pickup selector and the wire that goes to ground.

Double-check me, but I think I did that. :)

Oops. The ground is going to be wrong due to the way GE drew this. Editing the diagram now.

Fixed.

Re: Adding a phase switch

After wiring/soldering everything up together:
- the neck pickup is silent hum/buzz wise (with the tone pot dialed back completely).
- as soon as I engage the bridge pup (both pups or bridge only), there is an obvious grounding problem which also becomes stronger when I touch the guitar bridge.

If I dial the tone down to 0, it gets bearable, that is unless I touch the bridge.

I am using a star type grounding via the volume pot:
1. green and bare from the neck pickup ==> the volume pot
2. grounding of the phase switch ==> the volume pot
3. ground of the tone pot ==> the volume pot
4. the volume pot ==> the jack sleeve
5. bare from the bridge pup goes to the guitar bridge

I am obviously doing sth wrong with the bridge/tone pot grounding.

Re: Adding a phase switch

Did you notice that I "broke" the connection between the bridge "south start" wire and ground? The bare wire should be grounded independently of the south start wire. Are these Duncan pups?

Re: Adding a phase switch

Uhm, I think I just forgot to connect the bridge grounding wire to my grounding depot (volume pot).
Now I've connected the bridge pup bare to the volume pot and all the buzz seems to be gone.

This is how the girlie looks now: Tea's.Lotus.jpg

Sounds amazing both in series and parallel. Hum/buzz is virtually non-existent in all modes and positions. Pups are Dimarzio DP100 (bridge) and DP205.
I've got DP100 in other guitars, so nothing new on that front, but Steve Morse's DP205 just blew me away.

One thing worth mentioning; with a quick test run I've just completed I can't figure if the phase switch makes any difference though. I'll get back to it later today for a proper assessment. I'm going to record and then post some samples to Soundcloud too, so stay tuned :)

Re: Adding a phase switch

Cool. Nice looking axe. Remember, the phase switch only works when both pups are on. Polarity is only relevant to another signal. A guitar has no absolute polarity.
