Additional Overtones After New Bridge Fitted?

Hi all,

I put a new roller bridge on the six string side of my Epi double neck, and now have some kind of higher pitched overtone (if that's the right word for it) being produced if I don't dampen the strings behind it going to the stop bar.

The new bridge had to be worked on to fit; As the post spacing was of the rather unhelpful 72mm variety, I had to widen the post holes in it, towards the center, and it is currently a bit of a tight fit.

It's audable acoustically, so I'm guessing the issue is with the bridge, but as everything's snug, I'm wondering if I'm overlooking something?

There are a lot of audible acoustic affects that don't translate electronically.

Re: Additional Overtones After New Bridge Fitted?

Ah, I should've said it's present when plugged in, as well as acoustically audible #doh!

Re: Additional Overtones After New Bridge Fitted?

Some overtones are nice. All you can do is to see if there is anything loose. If it is the same note every time you play then it sounds like a bridge issue.

Re: Additional Overtones After New Bridge Fitted?

It's across the board, if more noticeable in higher registers. They do sound musically related (another pointer to the bridge being the culprit?), though under lead gain not in a way I find pleasing.

I'll have to go over it with a fine tooth comb :15:

Sounds to me like Fender Jaguar syndrome. :)

How much latitude for side-to-side movement do the roller saddles have?

Have you tried damping the lengths of string between the bridge saddles and the tailpiece anchoring points?

FJS? Is it bad doc, will the patient survive, or will this lump of plywood go the way of old yella?

There is a tiny amount of side-to-side play in the rollers. I've got the same bridge on my LP, but without this issue, so I'm about to compare that.

Damping does remove it, having just shoved cotton wool under the strings there to save on finger management.

It appears to be happening on the 12 string side too, albeit less noticeble amid the sort of sound you're getting from that anyway. Different style of bridge mind you.

This eliminates the roller bridge from enquiries.

That should've occured to me whilst typing my previous post, but... :eyecrazy:

The common thing between the two in that area would be the stop bars, but they feel to be down tight. They are quite a way back though (if memory serves, these guitars were supposed to be based on Page's 1275, rather than the normal/modern Gibson version), so there's a lot more string from bridge to stop bar, should that be of any scrutiny. Re: Additional Overtones After New Bridge Fitted?

The simplest solution is to position some compressible foam between the guitar body and the strings. Get it tight against each of the tailpieces and most audiences will never notice.

Re: Additional Overtones After New Bridge Fitted?

Jesus,can you use regular strings w/the 12?

j/k I think...

Hope it all gets sorted,tho.
Nice lookin' axe(s)!!!

Sounds like a plan. I'll have a good look at both tail pieces the next time I change the strings too, though I guess this one will likely get chalked up as "just one of those things".

Haha, well, 11-49s are fitted during a special ceremony involving a goat, custard, and small Romanian traffic warden called Bernard :naughty:

Cheers, here's hoping :)

Re: Additional Overtones After New Bridge Fitted?

What happens when Bernard is unavailable due to prior commitments?!?

Re: Additional Overtones After New Bridge Fitted?

Should such a situation whereby Bernard is unavailable to perform his duties arise, the scrolls dictate that a traffic cone - with strategically placed dark glasses, hat, and moustach - be used in his stead...

... or, failing that, Ed Milliband. :D

Re: Additional Overtones After New Bridge Fitted?

Is he tuss enough though? Hell yeah! Um, best to hide the bacon butties though :15:

Re: Additional Overtones After New Bridge Fitted?

Just thought about this whilst typing a post a few minutes ago about another bridge issue. To report; I moved the claws up to reduce the distance between them, and the bridges, and away went the overtones :)
