Advice on SJM relic project

Given my love of all things tacky/retro/vintage/relic/antique or whatever you want to call it, I just couldnt resist one of these cheap SJM guitars that Rondo Music carries. I mean come on, $139 new, how can you pass that up for such a unique body

Now the pups are probably crap, the frets need work, and Im sure the wiring is sloopy as all heck, but what a cool one of a kind shape

Short of a mutant jazzmaster for about 1/10th the price. You can save another $20 by getting a hardtail, which is more practical but when personally I think this thing needs the fulcum style trem no matter how bad those are.

This is a guitar that really is in need of the old relic treatment though if theres ever one.

Question is, what color do you think best suits it ?

I'm leaning towards a nice fiesta red, with the white pickguard and keeping the cream covers.

I think going for the white finish to start with would be the wisest move as red over white is a great color combo, but I'm still open to suggestions at this point, so what do you guys think ?

Seafoam, daphane blue, keep it as it is, black etc ???

Pickguard is probably going to have to stay white because I can't get a replacment and dont want to spend more than the guitar is worth getting one custom cut.

So with that contraint, let me hear your thoughts

Heres a little before and after mockup I did as well

Re: Advice on SJM relic project

Oh yeah, given this is also what seems to be a standard sized neck pocket, any thoughts on a headstock design that might really work well with the body ?

I was thinking of swapping out the neck for something more intresting as well, maybe "V" style or even a 3+3 might balance out the body size a little better

Or a Flying V style could perhaps work well too....your thoughts please

Wait, you're planning of replacing the neck?

If so then why not spend a little more for a tortoise guard?
It'd look great with a black body IMO...

Re: Advice on SJM relic project

i think both examples look great, i keep staring at the red one...

how about a dannelectro style headstock?

Re: Advice on SJM relic project

I'm trying to imagine how a reverse CBS Strat headstock would look....definitely would add to the unique angles and lines.

I think Red would be a great colour, and I think a good red finish would look fantastic without being relic'd, too. Red guitar (and headstock maybe?), white pickguard and just the right amount of shiny chrome....classic retro. Yeah baby!

I have to say i really dig that guitar. Not sure how well the bridge and trem would work but it's got great appeal. I'd be interested to know what Danglybanger would think of it.
