Advice Wanted: Celestion speaker change in Peavey Classic 30?

Tried a Peavey classic 30 - great. A bit too much presence. I A/B'ed it with a Traynor YCV40. They Traynors have Celestion speakers. Nicer, more Marshall like distortion.

With my GT-8 into the effects return of both, got a brighter, more present soud from the Peavey, perferred the Traynor. But the Traynor is much heavier, and I have a very bad back.

Would swapping the Peavey speaker for a Weber or a Celestion get me closer to what I was hearing in the Traynor, or do you think that the sound difference is due more to differences in the amp?

Thanks....

I used to sell Peavey's and the transformation in tone by doing this change in the Classic combo's was phenomenal. The speaker is a huge part of the sound. A greenback (if you're never maxing the amp) or G12H30 would rock in that amp (classic rock/blues). If you want more bass and sizzle a V30 would be good. A Classic Lead 80 or 75 would be good if you're metalling it up. Any celestion would sound better than the Peavey speaker.

eg. greenbacks in a classic 50 2x12 combo was always better....

Thanks for the input! I thought that might be the case!!!! We'll see if anyone else weighs in!

I'm in the same boat, been trying to decide between the G12H30 and the V30.
I'm leaning towards the V30, 60 watts will mean more headroom and maybe a little more tonal range in the highs and lows.

C'mon Lew, give us a push! :laugh2:

There are lots of speakers that would work in the Classic 30. Don't forget about Eminence. If you are looking to add gobs of gain, that amps isn't what you are looking for. If you want to shape the sound, then a speaker change will do you a world of good.

I would put a V30, Governor or a Wizard in the Classic 30. But, there are so so many options, depending on what you are looking for.

A speaker change is like a tube change, you aren't likely to do it just once to find that sound in your head.

Re: Advice Wanted: Celestion speaker change in Peavey Classic 30?

once again, if you want a higher wattage g12h30, there's the eminence wizard, 75 watts, sounds pretty much the same, cheaper & made in america.

and g12h30's/wizards have much more bass than v30's, so i don't know what that was about in the 2nd post

since it's a 1x12 open back i'd go with the wizard for a more balanced tone, but lots of people like v30's/governors in 1x12's, so either would work

Re: Advice Wanted: Celestion speaker change in Peavey Classic 30?

I hear V30 is the best speaker going

Thanks, Guys... The answer to my original question definitely seems to be yes.

You can get G12T-75 speakers for cheap these days. I don't really like them in a closed back cabinet but they are pretty cool in an open back. You won't get that "bell tone" from them, but the marshally tones are pretty good, with some thickness.

I have not tried a v30 or a G12H in an open back so I can't comment on that setup.

I have been debating putting better a speaker in my Peavey Classic 30 as well..... I'd want some more bass.... which one would be best for more bass?

Re: Advice Wanted: Celestion speaker change in Peavey Classic 30?

With all due respect to the suggestion of a Greenback by some of the good folks here, I personally would'nt put one in a Classic 30. I tried one in mine and if you think that amp has a bit too much presence now (I assume you're talking about the gain channel) look out! It will slice your ears off. With a Greenback I found the high end to have way too much sizzle and the bottom end seemed to fade off. Of course were talking about something that is very, very subjective here. I hated it but you may love it. And I'm not saying there isn't a better speaker for this amp either. I just got tired of trying things out.

As a suggestion here's what I did with mine. After trying numerous speaker changes I wound up keeping the stock speaker and installed a Weber Beam Blocker in front of the speaker. In case you don't know about them it's a bar that's about 12 1/2" long and approximatley .030 thick. In the center is a 4" diameter cone and the cone side is towards the speaker. What this does is to diffuse the highs so they're dispursed just as the mids and lows are and it really, really helped tame the sound enormously. That spikey quality that the OD channel can have isn't going straight at your ears now. If you do go this route there is a little trick to installing these, so let me know and I'll give you the scoop.

I also added a 1X12 cabinet as an extension that I made with an Eminence Cannibus Rex and it really, really helped to fill in the sound. I also recentley thought I'd try out one of those new Bad Monkey overdrive pedals by Digitech and I'll tell ya what, I am MOST impressed with this pedal. It's only $40.00 and in my VERY humble opinion it's the best OD pedal (thru that amp) that I've tried out to date. The bass control is what really helps to fill it all out. I'm not saying it's the pedal above all others, no. But again (subjective) it just rocks thru that setup. It sounds great used as a main OD in the clean channel, but I think it shines as a boost in the gain channel. Keep the amps pre-gain at about 9:00, post-gain at about 12:00, set the pedal accordingly and you're flying!

Did'nt mean to go on and on here. Just thought I'd share what seems to work for me.

Wow that weber thing sounds cool!!!! high tech gizmo..... I also add an extention cab to my C30, but it is the matching Tweed Peavey 1x12 they offered in the 90's.... Peavey tells me it has a 75 watt speaker in it... The extention cab has a closed back and that really helps with more bass and volume... But i'm still interetsed in things to souping up this amp.... I most likely will keep it stock and/or sell it oneday and try something different

Re: Advice Wanted: Celestion speaker change in Peavey Classic 30?

celestion v30 or G12h30, and eminence wizrd or red fang are toneful choices

if you want the lightest possible speaker to help your back, get a celestion century vintage 30

Re: Advice Wanted: Celestion speaker change in Peavey Classic 30?

The Eminence Governor sounds VERY good in the C30. I put one in my C30 and everyone who has heard it thinks it's a big improvement.

Re: Advice Wanted: Celestion speaker change in Peavey Classic 30?

+1 for the G12 Century Vintage. It might give you slightly different sound, maybe a more modern type sound, due to the neodymium magnet inside of it. Its lighter too like mentioned above. I did a comparison between all the new AC30CCs a few months ago and I actually liked the one with the Celestion Neodymium loaded speaker best, even better than the Alnico Blues for some reason. More headroom maybe, sweeter overdrive tones, less farty bass.
