advidce wanted- Wah and OD pedals, little confusion

I'm continously growing tired of my od (bad monkey) and my wah pedal (gcb95).
The exhausting fact about the topic is, absolutely no shop in my whole country
has even 3 of the 5 pedals i'd like to try.
Perhaps anyone can give me some hints. I'm usually running the following setup ...
strat->wah->mxr distortion iii->bad monkey->cm surf trem->short timer->twin reverb (sometimes alternatively, sometimes additionally my recently built jcm800)
Overall i'm quite happy with the setup, but the bad monkey is not green enough
for me (sometimes a tricky thing to dial in really good and then still lacks
organic tone through ls-2). The crybaby is to sharp and has imo a horrible control.
Green ODs i'm interested in would be the maxon od808, bbe green and mxr
gt od. wahs i'm interested in would be vox 847a or bbe wah. i like the ibanez
reissue, but lacking bypass is KO criteria.
Meanwhile i'm tired of trying out everything and would apreciate advice. Of course
other products that may fit are also welcome, but i set myself a 225$ limit per pedal.
Goal: serious blues, bluesrock, classic rock

cheers

I use a TS9 and a Vox wah, I see no need for anything fancy or more $$$

Re: advidce wanted- Wah and OD pedals, little confusion

Vox wahs are great! If you want a "green" od might as well get a real ts-9, the maxon is great sounding but a feel it's more money than it needs to be.

Re: advidce wanted- Wah and OD pedals, little confusion

A TS9 should get you what you are after. I have 2 One on my home board that was modded by StratDeluxer97 and a stock RI that I use with some different amps. The modded version of this pedal is killer. I love the tone I get with it. I usually just have it set to give me a slight increase in volume & sustain. I have the gain set almost all the way down and adjust the volume accordingly. It works fine for what I am doing.

What amp(s) are you using?

Re: advidce wanted- Wah and OD pedals, little confusion

before buying a new wah you can easily get rid of some of the top end harshness on the GCB-95 with a simple pot adjustment. instead of typing it all out here it is from the popular stinkfoot wah mod page...

"To lower/raise the working range slightly, set the wah on a table, face down with the battery end towards your gut, and press the pedal down to the stop. Remove the bottom plate and locate the toothed bar that turns the pot axle. Move the treadle up/down a few times, to familiarize yourself with which way the pot turns as you press the treadle down towards the toe end. With a phillips-head screwdriver, remove (or just loosen it enough to turn it sideways) the white plastic flange that presses the toothed bar against the pot axle gears, and release the bar. Now you can manually turn the pot one or two notches back. Viewed from the battery end, you turn the pot towards you (it's clockwise, if you view the pot assembly from the left). There is room to safely adjust it two notches or so before the pot runs out of play."

about 2 minutes of work and you now have less of that sharp bite on top and a bit more low end. an easy free thing to try before spending money on a new wah....not that i'm against buying new wahs :D

as for the OD, i've gone through many and i really like the MXR GT-OD and it's cheaper guitar center only relabeled version the Classic Overdrive. i had an OD808 and it's long gone since i bought the GT-OD, same with the bad monkey i used to have.

Re: advidce wanted- Wah and OD pedals, little confusion

The Bad Monkey is a good pedal for how cheap it is but maybe you would like an eternity. I really like mine.

But keep in mind you'll be spending at the least $140 for a used one. I think they are like $220 new or something.

Re: advidce wanted- Wah and OD pedals, little confusion

great, pretty unisonous feedback. so target will be v847

over here, the maxon od-9 is even cheaper than the ibanez ts-9; would you prefer the ibanez over the maxon?
amps: homebrew twin reverb and jcm800

@andrew: i think eternity is not available over here :(

cheers

I recommend the Vox wah too. They are good for the money, especially the ones made in the late 90s if you can find one. The newer ones just dont sound as good.

I would pick the maxon over the Ibanez.

OCD works good with Strats

@xssive
I know the page and tried that already. also repleced pot and some stuff, but had not enough endurance on that topic to go through all the input. I'd rather use a working wah and build another amp ;) maybe i keep the gcb95 for that later on

@andrew
yep!

@guitarded
do you mean the fulltone?

cheers

I have the BBE wah. It is alright, OK... but nothing to rave about. True Bypass, but what I don't like about it is it is a tad bit trebly and does not seem to have a smooth sweep regardless of how you dial it. It does sound pretty good on some of my band's live recordings. The other guy in band has a Real McCoy.... Now that thing is expensive but worth every penny. Sounds excellent.

Re: advidce wanted- Wah and OD pedals, little confusion

btw. just googled a german dealer (at least in senseful shipping range for me), that
sells the eternity for 209EUR (~293USD) *cough*

Yes... I really like the Fulltone OCD for the fact it does not alter your EQ. It is not the Holy Grail but pretty close for me. I also have a Hardwire CM-2 on my board for tube screamer mid hump type FAT overdrive tones. It is a big improvement over the Monkey which was a tad muddy in my opinion while I had it.

Either one is great, Maxon used to make the TS-9 for Ibanez. Both sound great.

i see, if i can ab test a ts9/od-9 against the ocd

V847. The new ones are V847a. You can always ask a person how old the thing is. They made the better ones between 1993 and 1998.

If you can afford it... IMHO it's worth the money. It's one of the best transparent overdrives I've ever played. A few other people on here love them too like Rich_S and wah_wah. I bought mine from Bungalow Bill who raved about it to. He just needed some money at the moment.

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend the OCD but I know lots of people do like it. I found it pretty transparent other then it seemed to add quite a bit of highs to my signal making everything too bright while it was on.

The CM-2 i s cool too. I played one at a local shop about a month ago. It's definitely an improvement over the BM. I kept the BM for sentimental reasons though.

Re: advidce wanted- Wah and OD pedals, little confusion

Ever consider modding your crybaby? There's a lot of talk about Vox wahs, but have you ever looked at Snarling Dogs? I've had mine for about 6 years and now that I've modded it I don't think I will ever want another wah pedal. Not to say that all of their pedals need modding, but the model I have needs it. They have some really cool wahs out there that give you tons of control and tone shaping to the wah's sound. My favorite thing about them is that they're large and have a really wide sweep, as compared to nearly every other make of wah pedals that have the narrow Dunlop/Vox sweep. But that's just a brand that I really like to whore out. Jeff Beck has been using them for a while, so that's a great endorsement.
