Advise boutique 1 or 2 Rack Unit Power amp ?

Hi folks,

This time I'm putting together a rack system. I posted elsewhere that I'm letting go of an early 60's blonde Bassman & "kickback" 2x12 cab, and snaked a $300 rack mount '89 Fender Super 60 instead.

But you know how GAS is. I also picked up a ( currently redundant ) Hughes & Kettner Tubeman preamp, and I have some other rack comapatable goodies, looking for their new home.

One thing that would be welcome would be a small (1 RU), nice - preferably quality older / used - boutique low power amp to match. I've seen Marshall and Mesa 20/20's floating around. Also killer spring reverb, conditioners, F/X, tuners etc are of interest.

Any other comments ?

I like the Mesa 20/20 over the Marshall....if for no other reason than it has a fan ! Those little suckers get HOT !!!

If a 2u amp is doable, I HIGHLY recommend the VHT 2:50:2....killer unit there !


Peavey made a 1u reverb & trem piece....Peavey Valverb...discontinued, but folks raved about it.


The Digitech 2112 preamp/fx box is a fairly inexpensive good sounding unit.

Rocktron Prophesy also kicks a$$, esp. paired with the VHT 2502 :bigok:

If you want Marshall, I always thought it would be cool to get the JMP pre/JFX/20-20 amp......3 1u pieces full of classic Marshall sounds !!!! :D

Lots of cool stuff out there.....a guy on The Gear Page is selling some ADA stuff right now :wink: ....but it's easy to go overboard !

Mesa 20:20 for 1U. That's really the ONLY low powered, high quality tube power section out there as far as I'm concerned.

Very helpful, thanks guys. No argument it looks easy to go overboard, but older rack gear so far has been pretty easy to find, and quite inexpensive, compared to similar combo or stack stuff. I assume it is not cool to be caught with decent older rack gear ?
