Aesthetics Question

Ok - this is honestly about LOOK only

Is it lame to have a combo beside a 4x12 and run the combo into the 4x12 (either on its own or in tandem)?

Or should one just get a head shell and make the combo a head for those half stack gigs, and be done with it?

Re: Aesthetics Question

I don't think Ray Charles would find it lame at all...nor Stevie Wonder.

Seriously, I *see* no problem with it. With nothing on top of the 4x12, that's more room for your beer. :D

Besides, I have to go with it because I'll be doing this exact thing tomorrow at practice, only with a Marshall Lead 12 combo. My head is still in the shop.

Re: Aesthetics Question

If the people watching you know their stuff guitar wise, then they'll just be thinking "I guess he needs more volume from his combo" . . . and if they don't, they'll just be enjoying the music anyway. I don't think anyone would care . . .

Re: Aesthetics Question

I can't do it, I guess I'm a shallow aesthetics guy. A head into a cabinet looks right, but a combo into a cabinet just looks "odd" to me. :smack:

Guitar Players... :smack: :smack: :smack:

Only "musicians" I know of who practice in front of a mirror....:laugh2:

Re: Aesthetics Question

I did that for a few concerts back when i had a Marshall Valvestate VS265R and I was borrowing my drummer's 4x12. A 3/4 stack did look pretty interesting plus the combination of a 2x12 open back and a 4x12 closed back made for some cool tone.

Re: Aesthetics Question

Dont worry about it, in the end you just need the right sound, doesn't matter how you do it. If it matters that much, stick the combo behind the cab. A few people in the audience may wonder what mystery amp you use to get your godly tone:)

Great idea until the bass (sound, not instrument) shakes the beer straight off the speakers.

Re: Aesthetics Question

lol about the beer

Nah, my reasoning is slightly different

Aside from loveing the open back mixed with the closed back 4x12 - I like keeping a 2x12 combo rig on tap - very easy to move, get to gigs, play and be out. For harder rock it's nice to milk the 4x12, but I do not want the chore of buying a new head cab and having to move the chassis back and forth.

I'll admit, I have seen hard rock bands using Mesa Dual Rec 2x12 combos and HRD's and it wasn't as cool as a Marshall half stack. Being honest here.

Part of it is me being lazy and cheap. I am glad to hear no one thinks it's lame. I'm waiting for some of the metal head kids to chime in.

You guys don't have spill rails on your amps? You probably don't have cup holders on your mike stands - :smack:

What a bunch of tea-totalling lightweights:laugh2:
