Age of my JB?

I've got a JB that I picked up in 1997, used. I'm guessing at that time in was 1-2 years old. So I figure it's from 1995 or so. There is a sticker on the back that has JBJ on it. It's all black, Seymour Ducan writing is not on it.

I'm curious because on the forum there is a lot of talk over differences between the older JB's and new. That the older have A2 mag. and the newer an A5, I guess. That the older sound better?

Opinion seems that those who like JB's prefer the older ones. Would my P/U be on of the older ones? Not sure how to tell what mag. it has in it.

Can anyone help?

Re: Age of my JB?

JBJ means it was wound by MJ.

i'm unsure of the magnet differences though. i remember bluesman(?) citing a phone call to MJ confirming that the original JB was an alnico 2.. refer to my thread titled "Pickup trend (JB)"
i do recall Evan saying that the construction of old and new JBs are same though.

Re: Age of my JB?

I did check out your thread "Pickup trend (JB)". I actually read this earlier and that's what triggered my question. Trying to figure out if this age P/U has an A2 or an A5. Mostly out of curiosity at this point.

Re: Age of my JB?

Dumb question because I'm sort of new here. What does wound by MJ mean? Thanks.

Exactly that.
That particular JB was wound by MJ (Maricela Juarez I think is her full name).
She has golden fingers, now she winds the custom shop pickups.

Consider yourself lucky! ;)

I have a DDJ...........Duncan Distortion wound by MJ. It does have some sort of special "MOJO" about it.........

I'm definitely NO expert on pickups, but would say that your's has an A5 in it. Yeah, it's an older one for sure, by 10 to 12 years given your estimate. I'm guessing that the JB's that had A2's initially would be from around '80 to somewhere near the mid '80s. I happen to have an '86 JB that I got new then, and I believe that it is an A5.

Re: Age of my JB?

Thanks for all of your help. Pretty cool about MJ and this pickup. Wonder if I call Seymour Duncan if they could tell me age & mag. type. It probably is an A5, but to be honest, the age is a guess in my part.

Problem is besides the JBJ on the back, there really is no other identifiers....Reason I'm trying to find this all out is because from reading posts, I think the A2 would be more suited from what I'm looking for. I'd hate trying to replace the mag. if there is already an A2 in there.

Correction, that was me that had that conversation with MJ. The best way to find out which mag is in your JB is to put it in and play it. If it is "ice pickey" then you more than likely have an A5. Swapping the magnet isn't hard and can be done in under 10 min. (Not the first time, you got to take your time with it).
