Aged/Relic'd cover for a phat cat?

Anyone know where I can get one? It's going in the neck of a heavily distressed tele, and the bright nickle finish just isn't working..Any thoughts on how I can even do it myself? Is it safe to do while attached to the pickup with the screws in place? I did some searches, and all I came up with were distressed humbucker covers..

scotch brite. I learned it from custom shop motorbike guys who use it to take the sheen off crome. I did this whole guitar with scotchbrite:
