The main negative here is the pickups. I dont know how long I could stand them before replacing and Id rather not have to replace pickups at all.

The main positive is I really love the look of the no-inlay ebony board and black hardware on red.

Epiphone Prophecy GX/EX

Highly figured quilt maple top
Solid mahogany bound body
24 jumbo frets
Hard maple SpeedTaper D Profile, satin-finish set neck
Ebony fingerboard
Eye-catching pearl inlay knobs
Strap locks
Graphite nut
LockTone locking Tune-O-Matic bridge/stopbar
Grover machine heads
Deep, rich black cherry finish
Made in USA pickups
Gibson Dirty Fingers
coil-tapping pickups
Unique blade inlay pattern
Gold hardware
Bound fingerboard

I think the Maple neck is a typo, most places ive seen say its mahogany.

Price $599 new without case plus free shipping. Can snag it for less probably depending on the guitar center special. $50 off this weekend for example.
Can be had for 400-599 used with case on the high end of that price range.

The main negative. I like the look of the inlays, but figure they are pearloid or something like that, since its never specified. Dont know If I want 24 frets or the tapered neck. Im looking for something with a neck thats a little fatter than my Jackson DK2. Not crazy about gold hardware, but dont hate it. 1 volume, would prefer 2.

The main positives. Pickups. Probably cant go wrong either way, though im leaning toward the GX and the gibson dirty fingers w/coil tap instead of the EMGs. Probably wouldnt need to replace either. The bridge and tailpiece are locking. Pretty nifty feature without the need for set screws.

Re: Agile vs Epiphone

Damn it. I can't change my vote. Well, subtract from agile and add to epiphone, because I'm changing my mind and going with epiphone. Yeah, I prefer 22 frets and 4 knobs, but I just can't get over that epiphone quilt top. In general it is a much better looking guitar than the agile, mainly because I really dislike black hardware.

Re: Agile vs Epiphone

Well, I dunno that i could base a decision based on maple veneer tops. One could look better than the other based on lighting and angle anyway.

Different angle, though still looks mighty nice.

My favorite in hardware color is the Black Nickel. Kind of a Black/Gray.

Re: Agile vs Epiphone

The Epi's a little more expensive, but you get Gibsons PU's, probably ones you'd like (Dirty Fingers), and strap locks. Does it come with a HSC? The 'improved electronics' of an AL3100 still include a 'mystery box' toggle switch. Overall, the quality of materials and workmanship of the two are pretty good, and probably pretty close. This decision is going to be more on looks, and whether or not you want to change PU's. Too close for me to call.

Re: Agile vs Epiphone

If you are buying for looks, buy the one that appeals to you more.

If you are buying for practicality, the Epiphone has much better features.

And even if you hate the DFs, you can turn them around to help pay for new ones.

I also like the satin finish neck on that Epi model.

But the 24 frets is a HUGE turnoff- 24 fret neckbuckers are totally not my tonal thing.

I spotted a used one for $599 with a case. The new ones are without a case as are most of the used ones I have seen. I would probably have to go with an Epi case because the Prophecy is a little longer than average. The case is about $80. To accomodate the 2 extra fretts, I believe they shifted the neck up and moved the bridge forward to maintain scale instead of just taking the fretboard deeper into the body as with most 24 fret guitars.

Re: Agile vs Epiphone

I've had my agile for a year now and I still love it. The pickups aren't great but there decent and I'm sure you could atleast put up with them for a couple months.

At one point I bought that same epiphone back when they were 800$ but someone talked be into taking it back and buying an agile. I'm glad I did. The epiphone pickups are better but not by much. No matter what guitar you get I really reccomend getting duncans in it anyway.

But back to the matter at hand. In my opinion the agile plays better. I got better action on it and I just didn't like the 24 fret neck it was hard to get used to the different sized frets. And i didn't like the shape of it. But that's just me. You may actually like that. The sound on them are really equal no major differences there.

The one plus the epiphone has is it's features like the coil taps and strap locks, but those are all things you could easily add to the agile for cheap.

Ultimately I would just try to try out both of the guitars. The agile may be hard to find but atleast go up to your guitar center and try out the epiphone.

Re: Agile vs Epiphone

By different fret size, do you mean the frets on the Agile are smaller? They are supposed to be Jumbos, but saw a couple reviews earlier tonight where they said they are more like mediums.

Im really used to Jumbo frets and tend to not like guitars with the smaller frets. Mediums might just be a deal breaker.

Re: Agile vs Epiphone

Sorry for the confusion there but I was talking about the size of space between frets. Not the frets themselves. The space between the frets on the epiphone was a lot smaller than I was used to. I used to play on a strat so that was a big difference for me. The actual frets themselves on the agile are taller than but just as wide as the ones on my strat. I'm not sure what the name of them would be.

Re: Agile vs Epiphone

Ive heard the Rondos are better than the Hodos because people dont make fun of you quite as much for owning them.
