AIIPro,JB,Distortion MEGADETH comparison

Re: AIIPro,JB,Distortion MEGADETH comparison

lordy, that is alot of "taking a mortal man and put him in control" :)

Re: AIIPro,JB,Distortion MEGADETH comparison

Thanks for recording the 81 (and others)! :)

The 500 was empty sounding when playing the prechorus of the song, but the rest of the riffage was fine. Hmm.

The 81 sucked an egg for the main riff, but during the prechorus it was better. The 81 is such a compressed and cutting solo-ing pickup that when it hits an amp, even under heavy distortion it manages seperation. Killer for solos and some rhythms, but too cutting and focused for simple, power chordal riffing - though I'd personally still use one for power chordal rock if it was needed. Good job nonetheless.

The JB is definitely the one ultimately though; the original Megadeth tracks are more crunchy and distorted sounding than your recording (no doubt as they were in a recording session and were purposely trying to acheive that particular sound), but their tracks and your tracks both had that unmistakable JB response: relatively loose bass, but great for riffing and lead guitar. :)

Re: AIIPro,JB,Distortion MEGADETH comparison

a: because they decided not to use jbs and insted used EMG81s for the rhythym chug parts of the recording in question ;)

Re: AIIPro,JB,Distortion MEGADETH comparison

I've always wondered this. I've never had a guitar a JB sounded good to me in.

i suspect that the rhythm parts were always done on tuneomatic/stoptail guitars and not trem, IMO this would've helped
they probably "gated the sh1t out of it" as well... possibly some EQ 'studio magic'

DIO-that 500XL didn't sound bad; how do you compare it to the duncans you played?

Re: AIIPro,JB,Distortion MEGADETH comparison

First, this was a cool idea!! I love the song anyhow, but it really gives me a chance to see the difference in the pups.. Only thing that would make it more perfect would be using the same guitar, diff pups..

Ive only been able to listen to the original 3.
Distortion sounded the best, as the Jb was kinda sharp sounding.
The A2p suprised me tho! Sounded killer ! Warm and heavy

Re: AIIPro,JB,Distortion MEGADETH comparison

Ok, couldnt stop... The 81 sounded pretty cool too! more of a diff than I figured Id hear. If you wah all over it, we could see what Hammet would sound like in Megadeth..haha

I really liked the 500xl!! crispity crunchity but with body!!

Considering the 500XL cost about half the price of a Duncan, I'm really pleased with it. I don't know (or care) if Dime really DID use these, but you can certainly get his sound with them. I love this pickup and would certainly replace it with another if anything happened to it.

Re: AIIPro,JB,Distortion MEGADETH comparison

Perhaps not the most original sounding but I think the XL500 definatly sounded the best, just so aggressive and cutting, but without sounding thin/shrill.

The DD sounded nice and tight and heavy as well, but didnt quite have that tear your face off tone of the XL

Definatly was a key to Dime's (RIP) tone

Re: AIIPro,JB,Distortion MEGADETH comparison

that clip on the soloist is fcking awesome, don't know if it's the JB in that guitar or your playing but it's what i'd go with

still trying to figure out how the A2P sounds so good for metal, next to the lawrence and the DD. fair enough it's not suited to it like the lawrence is suited to it, but it sounds good and thick

thanks for posting these clips man, i love obsessing over this stuff

Re: AIIPro,JB,Distortion MEGADETH comparison

I liked the tone of the Distortion the best.

Just had a fullness to it the other didn't.
Others tended to sound a little harsh in comparison.

Re: AIIPro,JB,Distortion MEGADETH comparison

The Distortion clearly has the warmest tone, and because of that, i (again) can hear exactly why i do not like the JB one bit.
Way too trebly sounding for my taste.
I still prefer the A2P's openness and looseness, (and out put), just wish it could have had the same warmth as the Dist ! = is that possible ???

Thanx for the clips !

Re: AIIPro,JB,Distortion MEGADETH comparison

Thanks for the nice comments guys. The SL3 soloist seems to be the best sounding and playing guitar I've ever touched, it's awesome in every way. :)

Re: AIIPro,JB,Distortion MEGADETH comparison

Okay, here's some more I just did with new guitars or pickups I've got recently.

DiMarzio Super Distortion in my "Dave Murray" Squier copy:

Late 80's/early 90's Squier Fat Strat, stock pickup (I believe). This is the guitar I was asking for info on recently, it sounds alright although I think the pickup is more suited to less high gain styles. Pinch harmonics are still pretty easy to get though.

Finally, a single coil just to see how it'd sound.
Squier Affinity single coil (in my Marlin "Freya" strat, the plywood guitar that was used here for the first SH6 Distortion clip).

Re: AIIPro,JB,Distortion MEGADETH comparison

Just added another with the Custom Custom. I made a mistake in this, but couldn't be bothered playing it AGAIN!
