All I asked about was how many bands and level controls

Aceman

I am your doctor of love!
And I got 3 pages of:
- EQ isn't needed
- EQ is dangerous
- Parametric EQ
- The amp controls are fine
- 31 band rack EQs
- Pre/post production EQ.

Thank you to the like 2.5 people who actually answered the question. I appreciate the worry less about total bands than the mid free choices.

All I wanted was to know how many bands you find useful, and how you live without a level control. To the rest of you, I say....

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHH

So, Ace, what was the final answer? How many bands and what frequencies did you decide on? Inquiring minds want to know.

Well, then you definitely should stay away from EQs.

Without quoting the 2.5 answers this ain't nothing but another rant. No value in even raising it as an issue, really. I want to learn from the pros, there's nothing to learn here.

Unless it's a festival, 3-4 bands max, and always always always watch the level control. Some wanker in an 80's cover band wearing a blonde wig might turn up his faux half-stack so it has the tonez. Watch out for that guy. :D

All jokes aside, 6-7 band EQ is plenty for guitar. A level control is a must for me if I were to use one. I've seen guys use them as a lead boost to always-on tone shaping. Heck, you can even use one to lower volume and EQ it to sound good, like rolling the guitar volume back but without rolling the guitar volume back (think the HBE Detox EQ). A GE-7 will cover everything you need. I don't know if they still have the hiss issue like older models did but if so, it's an easy enough fix. Can't go wrong with it with or without that mod.

I also stand by my posting that thread. I don't know why a brand would even make an EQ(or any pedal) that doesn't have a level control.

Yet there are a few...I can see that the approach would be cut all the other levels, but that's just one aspect. You are inherently changing volume, so you might need to adjust the overall level. Can't imagine going without one.

I think that you would be best served by a three band parametric. A true parametric with Q controls for each band and a master output level control.
There, are you happy?
