Anyone have ideas about the types of pickups that I can use suitable for jazz playing on a purpose assembled Start.

I have two ideas for arrangement:

(i) a, 2 humbucker setup. Neck and Bridge.
(ii) a, 3 pickup - similar to general strat setup. Or, maybe, 1 neck, 1 middle and 1 bridge humbucker.

I like well defined chords and smooth solo playing. Currently, I use a Fender Jazzmaster and like the neck switching arrangement, however, I would like to broaden the concept.

Anyone have any ideas

The Benedetto line of pickups are great jazz pickups. The B series pickups sound great. I've heard Jimmy Bruno's Benny 7 with those, they are very good. I was planning on putting them in a H/H Strat, myself. I've also heard Frank Vignola's archtop with the S series floating pickups, which are pretty much the same thing. The B Series are mounted humbuckers and the S Series are floating pickguard mount humbuckers. The only thing I dislike about Frank Vignola's sound is that his guitar is made of mahogany, and it's not quite bright enough for my liking. I personally prefer brighter instruments, don't care for mahogany much, just personal preference. But, I think they'd sound great in an alder or ash Strat.

Essentually, the S and B series Benedetto's bring out the natural acoustic properties of the guitar's tonewood.

I can't speak for the Bennedettos.

I'd stay with the low output Duncans like Seths, 59's, or Jazz's. The order I put them in is darkest to brightest. The Seth is the only one that doesn't come in tremspaced, or with 4 lead cables. All of them sound great though.

I've always thought the Alnico II Pro's would be great for jazz.

They are.

The APHn does the deed in my Hamer and the APS-2's work great in my 62RI strat.

I believe the Jazz isn't available tremspaced either, much to my annoyance.

for H-H, I would suggest original Gibson classic 57.

the Jazz is not really a good choice for traditional jazz sounds, it is way too bright- it is really mis-named. I like the APHn, myself.

The jazz even though its low output is probably a little bright for normal home baked jazz. Its incredibly articulate though, and a chord is really defined. That aside, I've always found the jazz and the custom custom are a great combo for a rocky jazz, you can always adjust the tone knob if you think it has to much character.
