All-time LEAST favorite pickup

If you had to choose one pickup (or one pickup style) that you never liked, which would it be and why?

I really dislike P-90s because I think they're a bit too squawky. They straddle the line between singles and hums.... they don't have the heft of a humbucker OR the character of a single. Don't get me wrong, a lot of cool players use them and they definitely serve a purpose, but they've never been my thing.

Any thoughts? :)

I don’t like not liking things… Wait, maybe I do like not liking things.

I don't like I don't like posts.....

There was a massive "least favorite guitar" thread in the Guitar Shop forum a couple weeks ago, so everybody knows this is in fun. Everyone's opinion is equally valid, so there's no reason to be defensive.

Re: All-time LEAST favorite pickup

I think the Ibanez Powersound pickup should be in the top 10 for worst of all time.

I've heard mixed things about Powersounds.

Hey, what's up with the pickup in your avatar? Does that actually exist somewhere?

Re: All-time LEAST favorite pickup

The JB sounds like trash in my opinion. I have had factory pickups sound better.

Re: All-time LEAST favorite pickup

I would think about playing a powersound over a JB.

Re: All-time LEAST favorite pickup

The stock pickups in my Epi are my least favorite. The neck is pure mud, and the bridge is an icepick.

Re: All-time LEAST favorite pickup

Stock Encore pickups are certainly nothing to write home about...

Re: All-time LEAST favorite pickup

I´d say the Carvin Hummies I had, or the cheap stock pickups they replaced (Mako rhoads copy) ;)

Re: All-time LEAST favorite pickup

The old pick ups in my ibanez guitars. I think they were powersound or the AH1. I don't know the difference. Whatever they were, they just sucked ass

Re: All-time LEAST favorite pickup

although i hated the powersound in an ibanez...... i put one in the soundhole of my acoustic and its pure magic....seriously, its strange sounding, but its just magical....... ill post clips if you dont believe

Re: All-time LEAST favorite pickup

I don't post in favorite or poll threads and I'm not really subscribing here in this least favorite thread (never said I didn't read them) but I have to make an overwhelming observation here.

I found out that Evan and Ron Jeremy (see Theodie avatar) play guitar this week.

Wow!

Evan...Just ribbing ya man...It's really good to know your a playah...no pun intended. Late Chuck

Re: All-time LEAST favorite pickup

evan can indeed play, he has played with seymour quite a bit. but did you know he plays the uke?

as far as the worst pup, its a toss up between the powersounds which are horrible in almost every way and that steve morse bridge that i couldnt get along with at all, not a bad pup, but i hated it.

I hate to beat on a dead horse, but I also really dislike EMGs. I think in the past, I've made it clear why. :D

Thanks for posting your thoughts, everybody.

What is it to not like about EMG's? I guess you are entitled to your opinion, so I won't bug you about it

Personally I really hate fender and squier stock pups, but some players use stock fenders and get nice tones... they're just not for me though.

Re: All-time LEAST favorite pickup

I happen to like stock Fenders a lot, but how much I like them depends on which model you're talking about. As for stock Squiers.... they're pretty terrible.... thank God for after-market pickups.

I don't want to open a can of worms, but EMGs just don't suit me at all. I don't really like active guitar pickups for the simple reason that they don't seem to have the "organic" "natural" tone of passives. They sound a bit too overprocessed and sterile. They have a very cold, cutting, metallic tone that you either love or you don't. They do a great job of tightening up your bottom end and giving your power chords definition but I think they sound like nails on a chalkboard.

That's just my opinion and of course it's not everybody's. I don't like them, but I understand they're a high quality pickup and I don't want to out and out badmouth them. I'm just pointing out why they're not my favorite.

The JB, the Screamin' Demon, or even the Invader would give you a lot more warmth and personality than an EMG, but that's a bit like comparing apples to oranges.
