Re: Allen head vs. regular polepieces

Big Black has been using screws in his Demon. He took out the allens.

he said the screws are warmer. Maybe the reason the Demon is so articulate is because of the allen heads?

Re: Allen head vs. regular polepieces

I've been wondering about this as well. Any noticeable changes to the EQ when switching to regular polepieces?

Re: Allen head vs. regular polepieces

I like blades. My favorite pickups are the EMG 81 & the Invader. From what I gather, between the 3 magnets and huge pole pieces, the Invader is close to blades.

I do NOT like hex poles. I had an Evolution, and didn't like it until I stuck oxide caps (Invader) in it.

Re: Allen head vs. regular polepieces

I think the pickup determines what type of poles to use. Hex poles do accentuate highs, but my DMZ SD is one of the warmest pickups I have. Go figure. It's in the neck so maybe that has something to do with it. Slotheads seems to bring up mids, at least that what it does to the Demon. It seemed to bring up the mids, and got rid of the shrillness I was getting. I guess you may want that trebble response if you were soloing, but I'm not really a shreder is so it was just too much. I have never had a pickup that was all slugs, but I would think it compliments the slotheads, doing much of the same, since you never find hex poles and slugs in the same pickup. I've never had blades either so I can't comment. People say the Dimebucker can be kind of harsh so maybe it does the same as hex poles. The good thing about blades is that you don't have to worry about string spacing.

Re: Allen head vs. regular polepieces

If I had a choice, I would use blades on everything except, paf like and more traditional sounding pickups. Basicly, the 59,aph,pg,seth, etc.

Re: Allen head vs. regular polepieces

I have changed the slotted for hex poles on a Custom,Distortion and JB Ceramic and they all have a tighter more aggressive attack with high gain. That said they were all bridge pickups. They worked well with the slugs I left in place. On a few different pickups (Gibson 490R and Gibson 496R/500T) I swapped the slotted and slugs out for ALL hex poles and it did thin out the sound a bit more than I preferred in the bridge but the neck was awesome (496R).

I also did the double rows of slotted in my Demon in the neck and I do like it but I will have to try all hex poles to compare. Heck I never even tried it in stock form in the neck and that's why I initially installed it there, as an ex band member had a stock Demon in his LP neck and it was huge!

Is it the JB with hexes worth using? It seems like it would really make your ears bleed. I'm interested though.

Re: Allen head vs. regular polepieces

Can anyone post any pics about all the different options? I'm not sure I understand all of them just from the text.

Re: Allen head vs. regular polepieces

Big Black I can't say what the JB with hexes would sound like with the A5 as I took that out to swap in my Custom, so I wouldn't know. I never cared for a JB as is. With the ceramic magnet and hex poles/slugs it sounds awesome!

Re: Allen head vs. regular polepieces

Hex poles is a general term to identify the hex shape slot on the head of the screw. Hex and Allen are the same thing just a different name. The picture shows 2 different kinds of hex poles, hopefully this will help explain:

Hexpoles1.jpg

TOP RIGHT: cylindrical screw typically found in older Dimarzio's like Super Distortion, Super II, Super III, Dual Sound, I think the Evolution uses these also.

Technical name is actually called a "SOCKET SET SCREW". The one shown there is a 10/32# x 1/2"

BOTTOM LEFT: the typical screw you find in any pickup as far as dimensions go outside of the type of head. Hex shaped slot instead of a flat slotted. Typically found in Dimarzios such as: PAF PRO, Double Whammy, Humbucker From Hell etc. Seymour Duncan uses these on the Full Shred, and 1 side of the Screamin Demon.

Technical name is actually called a "SOCKET HEAD CAP SCREW". The one shown there is a 5-40 x 1/2"

ahahahahaahahah
did you paint the pickup Blue?
ANotehr question.. what tha **** you did with your hotrails neck to fit in your charvel slot?
i´m still with it OUT of the charvel, and i´m still waiting for the CC trembucker from DANI.
AHHAahHAHaHAhaHAAHAh
That´s WEIRD.

Re: Allen head vs. regular polepieces

JP didn't paint it blue I bought it used and I guess the color faded or someone spilled bleach on it as the color is washed out.

The Hot Rails like I mentioned will need to have a slot routed in the cavity for the tab to clear the inside of the cavity. Someone mentioned on here that SD can make a Hot Rails without the triangular shaped base so it will fit without a small modification. In any event there isn't much wood you'd have to remove for it to fit, and considering it is inside the cavity you'd never see the route.

I never had this in my Charvel, the Charvel I sent you a picture of had the stock Jackson J-200R neck pickup which LOOKS like a hotrails but it's not. The Hot Rails is a much nicer pickup IMO.

I never installed it in anything. I don't know if I told you before, but I specifically bought that pickup just to send to you, since you've been looking for one so long. So I was hoping to count on you to tell me how it sounds in your nice Charvel Deluxe.
