Allparts Locking Tuners

I've seen these budget locking tuners that look exactly like Schallers at Allparts and on Ebay. They seem like the same ones coming out of China. Does anyone know if they are just cheap or good quality?

Not sure on Allparts, but the Schaller-style locking tuners GFS sells aren't great. A few years ago I bought a Tele neck with a set of those and the locks only worked on four of the six tuners.

Re: Allparts Locking Tuners

The first set of locking tuners that I purchased some years ago
Were from guitarpartsonline.com and were very inexpensive
The pin that locks the string wasn't attached to the wheel that locks it
When inserting the string I had to insert a paperclip in and pry the pin open

I stopped buying the cheapest I could find

Pay $50
Get a good set

Re: Allparts Locking Tuners

Back in my day, paying $80 for a set of Sperzels was the only option available.

Re: Allparts Locking Tuners

Schaller and Gotoh have been around just as long? How old are you? haha

The Sperzels were the only locking tuners the stores carried around here. Then the Planet Waves showed up, but I didn't like them.

Re: Allparts Locking Tuners

The ones I had wouldn't keep hold of the two thinnest strings in a 9-42 set, standard tuning, 25.5" scale. I threw them away and bought another set of Sperzels. Sperzels are far from perfect, but they've always at least worked.

Re: Allparts Locking Tuners

I've got a set I bought from riff city, they came with a cookie :) I have broken the G string twice at the tuner when I went all out bending the string. I'm not sure if there is a burr on tuner or if maybe I just tightened the lock too tight, after installing the new string I didn't tighten it as much and haven't had any more breaks.

Then what happened?

I stopped paying attention to tuning machines for a few years. Next thing I knew, just about every tuner brand had locking ones out.

And that's the history of locking tuning machines through the eyes of someone who occasionally almost knows what's going on.

Thank you so much for sharing.

Haha why do principles that can improve things get people all fussy? They're not even opinions.
