just wondering what weather the alnico 2 humbuckers are good for getting bell like tones with a sweet high end.

In general, Alnico 5 is better at that, particularly if you're talking about single coils.

With A2's, the lower in output they are, the more bell-like they can be, because they're less compressed on the high end, as well as less dense in the mids.

I wouldn't exactly describe the Alinco II HB's as bell like, but especially in the neck they do have a sweet singing voice that keeps givin' it up no matter how much gain you throw at it. Clean it's really articulate and clear. If you click on my soundclips in my sig, listen to Heaven's Door. All the clean parts and the leads are APH in the neck of a double fat strat.

The bridge position is a bit brighter and perhaps bell like, but still a bit to warm really. However, they are my absolute favorite stock humbuckers of all time. 59's might be more bell like clean, but the 59' neck was always a bit boomy to me.

A great combo I had once in an LP was a 59' bridge and an APH neck. If you get them in double cream it helps the tone quite a bit too.

The APHn can get there, the Antiquity is all over it, IMHO.

Good job Benjy....forgot to mention the Antiquity. Does it lose any of that quality if you have it potted?

I suspect that is the case. I have a standard, non-potted Antiquity neck 'bucker that's very chimey and sweet with that great bell-like ring to clean chords that's very hard to get from a 'bucker. I also have a potted Antiquity/PGn hybrid wound by the Custom Shop that's noticeably more focused and a bit darker with less of the top end sweetness that the standard Antiquity has in spades. It's not a bad pickup, but it's definately more geared towards high gain sounds.

There. Fixed it for you.

ok sweet. i already have the APH-2's set in my les paul. sometimes i just wish they had more top end sparkle with out the harshness. is it just me or does the top end on the APH's get kinda zingy and piercing?
