Question for the panel of experts:

Since I have never been exposed to alnico 2 magnets...

Who here (if anyone )has tried and liked alnico 2 or seth lover or pearly gates seymour duncan humbucker in the bridge of an alder strat?

Also,
if the results were not good ,please explain why if possible -ie flubbiness etc.

Thanks for the input .

Re: Alnico 2 in bridge of a strat?

Personally, I am an A2 fan and not objective. Although I personally owned a strat with an A2 based bucker I've played JacksonMIA's 78 equipped strat, CC equipped strat, and A2 JB strat. In all the guitars I thought the A2 mag did a real nice job of rounding the high end and keeping a good healthy midrange.

I have/had a Big Apple Strat which came stock with a 59n and PG+ (A5 instead of A2) bridge. To me those A5 pups were just a little too boomy and toppy.

I think you can EQ around the perceived flubbiness by carefully EQing your amp.

Not an expert by any means but I can tell you this, I have a "Custom Custom" in the bridge of an alder double fat Strat and absolutely love it. It's very warm, not harsh and just sings in there.

Custom Custom in my ESP Horizon. Split it sounds very stratty.

Thanks gentlemen for relaying your experiences..

I have available to me an alnico 2 Pro ,and a seth lover in the local shops -both alnico 2 pro mags.

Any call on which might sound better in the strat?

I prefer Alnico 2 in the Bridge of my maple-neck and fretboard/alder bodied strat. As far as flubbiness, the bridge of a strat is very very tight, and that compliments the A2 perfectly to my ears. It still has that classic A2 "give" but flubbiness is more a product of the amp than the magnet.

Re: Alnico 2 in bridge of a strat?

The APH is a great choice for hardtailish Strats and I suppose Teles. There's a roar in there that no other pickup gives.

I didn't like the PG so far but only had a neck.

Re: Alnico 2 in bridge of a strat?

I've got one PG in a hardtail Strat bridge. Not a fair comparison though, because it's a hardtail and most people think of the PG as the "A2 pickup that doesn't really sound A2". It's bright and slightly crunchy. Sweet and rude, just like the description says, are the two words I'd use for it. Without a tone control that thing was heaven to play, hell to hear when playing. With 250s in both pots I've gotten happy results. Very happy results.

It's odd, but somehow that pickup is very single coily. My guitar with that pickup sometimes reminds me of how a Tele would sound...

As far as the others, well I think if a A2 Pro sounds creamy and heavenly on a LP then probably I'd get similar, but clearer, brighter and more neutral sounds on a Strat. Not so thick or warm...but who knows? Give it a shot man!

The Seths sound pretty good on a Strat to me, they do lack slightly in some things if you're going for balls out grindcore...but my guess is you're not going for that.

The 78' sounds perfect in my Strat!
