Alnico 2 Pro pole pieces?

Hi!
I recently removed my Charvels pickups as they got stuck in the body, due to too tight screw holes (& maybe the lack of springs? Direct mounted pickups)

Anyway, I noticed that Charvel had mounted the pickups in the wrong positon; the neck pickup had sticker saying Full Shred BRG & the bridge pickup sticker said APH-1N - but both pickups have hex pole pieces?
I was under the impression that only the Full Shred had the hex poles & that the alnico pro has regular pole pieces?

Looking at photos (& even Charvels own promotional videos) of the Charvel DK24 2PT HSH - it seems like they all have neck humbuckers with hex poles.. Soo, is this a mistake from the manufacturer, or are there custom versions of the Alnico Pro with hex screw pole pieces?

Re: Alnico 2 Pro pole pieces?

I think they are OEM production for charvel with hex poles for both pickups. And yes the regular APH-1 has slugs and screws. Measure them just to be sure if they have been positioned in the wrong way. APH-1 is around 7.5 KOHM. are you the first owner? or someone else messed up with pickups?

Ok, that’s a relief :) I’m its 1st owner. It’s a great guitar. Can’t believe I’ve played with it this way since February.
I think I’ve managed to correctly solder the FS into the bridge pos & vice versa (1st soldering pickup switch) but when I tap the neck & single coil while having the selector switch at the bridge pickup I get sound - have i messed up the connections to the switch? It’s a pretty ‘advanced’ 5-way blade switch.

Damn it to hell I’ve been talking about this for a while now I thought nobody believed it lol.

Yeah they are A2Pro Humbuckers in the neck, with hex polepieces. Which pretty much makes them Full Shreds with Alnico 2 magnets. Fantastic pickups with a slight sweet Strat kind of tone to my ear. This should definitely be a thing, especially fir people who like the Jazz in the neck but with a slight warmth with increased pick attack.

Re: Alnico 2 Pro pole pieces?

So it is a special edition pickup for that model. Very cool! I wonder how they sound compared to normal A2Pros?

Re: Alnico 2 Pro pole pieces?

It sounds pretty damn awesome - but I've never played a regular Alnico Pro neck :) I was absolutely certain it was a mislabeled Full Shred.
If the pole pieces affect the tone - is it really an alnico pro?

Is it normal to get sound when tapping the neck & middle pickup pole pieces with a screw driver when I have the pickup selector in the bridge position?
Want to make sure I managed to solder it back together :)

Re: Alnico 2 Pro pole pieces?

You might get sound, but not nearly as loud as the bridge pickup. And yeah, poles can absolutely affect sound, although someone here probably has done a lot of experiments with different ones in the same model. The regular A2Pro is my favorite neck pickup, so I wonder hows these screws change that.

Re: Alnico 2 Pro pole pieces?

but why is the neck pickup in the bridge position and vice versa? (see the baseplate: 3hole version in neck, 1 hole version in bridge).

That photo was from before I swapped the pickup positions, just to show the pole pieces are the same on both pickups:) That was the way the guitar was delivered & how I've played it since February.
I took photos of the pickups backsides & front to ask the retailer about if it was a custom APH-1N or something else & he confirmed it's got custom pole pieces just for charvel

Sounds like someone fouled up in assembly.

My guess is the hex head is a minor tone difference. teh A2P is a great pickup.
