alnico 2 pro's too bright? neck too dark?

Re: alnico 2 pro's too bright? neck too dark?

Personally I thought they sounded great....

Have you played with the heights?

With the neck lower the pup and raise the polepieces. That will make the screw coil a little more dominant and clean up the sound. If that doesn't work consider putting the polepieces facing the bridge.

ith the bridge lower the polepieces and then lower the pup or raise it to suit. Probably lowering it will help.

does anyone else feel the alnico 2 pro's have a bright bridge and a dark neck? :banghead:

Kind of, not so simple.

"bright" or not isn't the issue.

The APH1 bridge has a grind and aggreesive drive that I like.

The APH1 neck sounds "lame" in lack of another word. It has this problem like any other full-potted machine-made A2 neck humbucker. I wouldn't recognize APH1 bridge and neck being the same pickup if I didn't know.

The '59 pair doesn't show any of this, there's a clear "hello 59" in both positions.

I couldn't help but noticing that Keri Kelly never used the neck pickup on his APHed sunburst during Alice Cooper shows, so...

First of all check the resistance of your pots! My first approach to the A2P were thru a 300k volume pot in the neck. Terribly muddy and dead. Second approach were thru 500k CTS Volume pot - much better!!

+1. Try two 500Ks in the neck for vol and tone, and two 250K's in the bridge.

I do this on a lot of my guitars, it really balances things out. Adds warmth to the bridge, and brightness to the neck.

Aren't they supposed to be Slash in a Box?

Unfortunately because every piece of wood is unique, you can't count on any PU given an exact pre-planned tone. One guitar to the next, the same PU can be very different. Drives us crazy too.

Like RockStarNick said, try 250Ks on the bridge & 500K on the neck (almost all my guitars are equipped like this). Another option is a brighter magnet in the neck like an A3 or A5.

Re: alnico 2 pro's too bright? neck too dark?

i think im gonna try the 59 pair next. the APH's sound a little too agressive for the U2 stuff im doing and for the christian worship i play.

DEFF NOT ME !

I really like the set in my SG !
Any bridge humbucker pu can always be darker (...that is just me), but i like this set as is !

I wouldn't call them aggressive... but perhaps more midrange-heavy than other pickups.

The 59s have less mids and more treble, for sure. Definitely worth a shot, they're amazing pickups.

Re: alnico 2 pro's too bright? neck too dark?

Personally, I think that SD is winding the APS-1's a little hotter than years ago. I have (2) dating from 87' and (1) from 89'. The hottest being the Bridge 6.22K. My luthier apparently had screwed up my Neck APS-1 and rewound it to 8.39K. I know for fact that the whole set was in the 6.0K range to begin with. I did some checking to see if any SD dealer had the APS-1 pup in the 6.0K DCR range, the highest I found was 6.6K DCR and the lowest around 6.2K These pickups are "phenomenal" sounding pickups with an all around sweet as tupelo honey tone, yet punchy with all the perfect mids. Unless SD has changed his formula (other than individual output from pup to pup) I see no reason why most players would not like them. It might take a little getting used to if you've used pups with A5 magnets for years because some describe them as slightly darker toned than A5 versions however, the APS-1's cover the 50's to classic blues to classic rock tones very well. Very balanced from position to position on your 5 way switch.

Maybe a lighter cap on the neck tone pot too.
