Alnico & Ceramic magnets sound different - why is this?

A lot of people say 'ceramics' are brighter and more aggressive, and 'alnico' magnets are warmer and smoother.

Is this because ceramic is a more powerful magnet, or are there other reasons?

cheers

I've played with a lot of low output ceramic pickups too, thanks to my experiences with Epiphone. I wouldn't call them brighter - just different. Under high gain they have a more grainy sound which is more metal, while alnico magnets are less modern and more smooth. Ceramic pickups have a more fuzzy top end which kind of flattens out, while the treble of alnico pickups is the opposite of fuzzy, whatever that is. It's hard to describe what I hear, especially since I'm probably just imagining it anyway. :D

From all that i've heard, alnico v mags are grainier in the mids than ceramics.

Really? My experiences have been otherwise, but most of the ceramic ones I've used have been dimarzio while every alnico one has been seymour duncan. I don't know.

Ceramic is just a different material entirely from Alnico, so it's not surprising that it would sound different. The surprise would be if it sounded the SAME as Alnico.

High output alnico pickups sound like alnico pickups....

Low output ceramic pickups like stock epiphone pickups from korea still sound like ceramic pickups under gain.....

It's not the output. At least, I don't think it is.
