Alnico II Pro single coils

These sound like promising single coil pickups that I've been looking at for awhile for the middle and neck positions of my strat. The only question I have is should I get them Flat or Staggered, and what are the differences?

Re: Alnico II Pro single coils

tonally, there's not a helluva lot of difference. people say that the staggered looks more like strat single coils, and that there is a difference in the field as a result of the stagger. Me, I haven't the slightest if there is a difference or not in the two. Just take whatever your bridge is, and do the same, or, if this is an HSS guitar, flip a coin.
However, this pickup is TREMENDOUS. It gives me some of the most amazing tone I've ever had, and, when I switch back and forth between that, and the Twangbanger I just tossed into the bridge... orgasmorgasmorgasm...

Re: Alnico II Pro single coils

The staggered pole pieces are "vintage correct", or simply, they match the constructin of single coil pups made in the 50's and 60's. The general theory is that if you have a vintage radius fretboard, you should use the staggered. For modern fretboard radius's of 9.5 or higher, use the flat.

I've not used the flat yet, but when I order my APS's, I'll get the flat. There should be a more even string response with the flat poles.

Re: Alnico II Pro single coils

My American Fender Strat was made in the early 90's....flat or staggered? Or does it really matter

Re: Alnico II Pro single coils

It probably doesn't matter, but I belive you have a 9.5 radius fretboard. I'd go flat if it were me.

Re: Alnico II Pro single coils

Some guys out there say that the staggered versions of the singles have a bit more chime and jangle than the flats. I don't know first hand since I've always used staggered singles.

Re: Alnico II Pro single coils

Have the staggered on my Kramer, it was born with those....they are not going anywhere, like them even better than my SSL-1's which are the A5 version.
The APS-1's have that smokey sound to them....never hard or unpleasent.
Great singlecoils.

Re: Alnico II Pro single coils

Fantastic pickup. I don't know if there is a big difference in the sound between the staggered or flat per se. As they are advertised, they are definitely very musical and very responsive. The reverse wound (left hand version) definitely tames a very unruly bottom end I used to get with the OEM pickups that came on one of my strats. Those things sing and have a very long natural decay/sustain. :)

Re: Alnico II Pro single coils

I use the staggered poles for vintage radius necks (7.25") and flat poles fro modern daduis necks (9.5" and above).

Re: Alnico II Pro single coils

This has come up before, and there's still an aspect of this that I don't get.
As far as the vintage or modern radius goes, one would assume that the staggered would have a tighter curve than the flat. Instead, it looks like someone punched the B-string pole with a hammer.

Whats the signifigance of the sunken B pole, relative to a tighter neck radius?

It is naturally, a louder string. Since it sits lower in the curve, the pole is lower to compensate.

Re: Alnico II Pro single coils

Thanks Butch. I was just coming back here to say that I'ld just found the answer over at the Kinman FAQ.

Great resource. ;)

Re: Alnico II Pro single coils

Does the pickup have a singing quality? By the way should I just go for the Flats then on my 93 strat?

Re: Alnico II Pro single coils

You've got to remember that back in the 50's when the staggered pole Strat pickup was designed most players used medium gauge strings with a wound G. Often FLATWOUND strings!

Even so, I like staggered polepiece Strat pickup...especially for the neck and middle positions. Just seems a little less chunky and little more chimey than the flat poled version.

I like them both tho. I use the APS-2s with a Twangbanger bridge pickup in my newest Strat: a nice Ocean Blue Metallic MIJ '57 style Fender Strat from 1988.

Killer vintage tone but a little hotter, more modern and alot chunkier than the pickups in my original '63 Strat.
