I Have an European SX Les Paul Style guitar, it has an alder body, maple neck, and rosewood fretboard. I want to put in some a2 pros to get a sound that is closer to GNR. Help ?

DiMarzio Air Classic Neck/Air Zone bridge

A2P will not do it for Alder. Too bright.

Bumblefoot uses a Tone Zone in his Vigier. May be too thick for your guitar though. Air Zone will bleed some of that off.

Re: Alnico II pros in alder les paul ???

My personal opinion is that you should try the Slash signature pickups. Duncan has a 21-day exchange policy, so you're not taking a big risk. And if it's too bright, turn your treble down on your amp a bit. Slash runs through a great big long cable to his wah, and then another huge cable to the amps. There's no buffering there, so the cable capacitance is dropping the treble. And then, on the amps, the treble and the presence are dialled way back. Don't be afraid to turn things down.

+1

I'd rather have some brightness to turn down, as long as it isn't too sharp or thin.

Also, isn't the A2Pro recommended for bright guitars?

@nike0223 : What version of GNR? Appetite/Slash, or current GNR.

I can only comment on the Appetite guitar sounds.

I listened to the Appetite album again a couple of months ago and realized Slash's sound is more mid to high-mid heavy, compared to what I would have thought. For some reason I always thought of his sound as being warmer than it comes off on that album (at least to my ears now). By warmer I mean a mix with more low-mids.

I guess it depends on your amp as well. The Air Zone might get you there if your amp needs some balls, or you at least want that on tap. The A2Pro has a shifted EQ in comparison (not that I'd call them similar in most other regards either). The A2Pro doesn't have a big or hairy low end. If you chug on the low E it's not the pickup for you.

Re: Alnico II pros in alder les paul ???

As someone who followed G N' R for most of his early guitar playing career, I can tell you the actual pickups account for very little of that AFD tone.

I actually own an AFD100. Not for the sake of replicating that tone, but because it's a top heavy modded Marshall, which basically encompasses Slash's tone. It's trebly, almost whiny, which may or may not be your thing.

You kinda have to ask yourself...how close does this sound to that Appetite tone:

Well it's certainly not a Les Paul with Alnico II Pros.
That would be an Ibanez w/ a '59/Norton. Tone is in your fingers.

Hey, thank you all for the advise.
Here is the deal i bought the Aph1 neck an Aph2 Slash bridge,
i live in Serbia (the Balkans) so thats what they got at the store
at moment.
I*m completely satisfied with the tone i sound relly close to Slash, ok maybe a bit brighter
but i like it a heck better then the stock cheap ceramic pickups in my guitar :D

BTW this is my SX Guitar http://www.music-market.eu/sx-eg2k-les-paul-black-electric-guitar-pack-1213.html

Nice man. Those are excellent pickups regardless and I'm sure you'll be happy with them regardless of the EQ.

Just remember, nobody can copy another artist 100%. So don't chase someone's tone forever, it'll drive you into a money pit. Learn from your favorites and come up with your own style.
