Alnico II/SSL-1/Custom 5 in a Ibanez S prestige?

Hi there,

I'm looking to get some new pups for my S prestige(Mahogany body/Rosewood fingerboard), I mainly play metal/hardcore but I also play in a youth group. Right now I have a Alnico II pro in the bridge of my Les Paul and it sounds absolutely amazing through my Mesa Boogie Mark III. It has great crunch but I want something with more gain, which is why I landed on the Custom 5. Though I just love the sound of the Alnico II pro, so I thought it'd be cool to get one in the neck, how is this combination? Thoughts? Will there be a significant volume drop from the Custom 5 to the Alnico II pro?(I learned this mistake buying a Dimarzio X2N for the neck in my Paul :smack:)

I also have a middle singlecoil pup on the go. I was vouching for a hot rails but I fear it'll sound like a humbucker, I LOVE the sound of a singlecoil on clean. I want the most warmest sounding singlecoil I can get, for clean rhythms and lead playing. Any suggestions? Right now I'm thinking the SSL-1.

Thanks for the help everybody!

Alnico II Pro single coil is warmer than SSL-1. If you still want warmer, you'd have to go with a high-output single coil. Custom Custom is a bit more like A II Pro bucker, compared to C5. If you don't mind it being quite loose on the bottom end, it'd be great, more middy than C5, which is a bit scooped.

Oh I see, I'll be checking that out! I don't mind a really loose single coil but I want a tight as anything humbucker sound, very defined and focused(which is why I sortof opted for lower output pups, but maybe that wouldn't really work?) Suggestions, suggestions!

Thanks!

I'm running a SSL-1 set with a Custom wind in the bridge on my Mahogany body with a quilt top roswood board maple bolt on neck MG 120. The Bridge pickup started life as a Custom -5 but now has a A-8 mag. The SSL-1's with the Custom 5 ballanced pretty good but I think the ballance would be better with the Custom Custom.
If you buy one of the Customs and don't like the ballance then a mag swap is pretty easy and should get you where you want to go. The tight articulate Custom-8 IMO KILLS with the SSL-1's and tapped in pos 2 has a KILLER QUACK!
