Alnico II

I put one of these in the neck of my Gibson Solid Guitar, but it is not the Slash sound i seeked. Is this because of the raunchy quality that SG's have and because it isn't in a Les Paul?? Do SG's butcher the tone of any pup that way?

Re: Alnico II

i have A2P's and to get a slash sound I use quite a bit of treble on the amp with a bit of bass, scoop the mids

on the guitar, roll off the tone a bit...works great for me

Re: Alnico II

Well, SGs don't sound exactly like LP, they are thinner... I don't think they would "butcher" up the sound since they are nice sounding guitars but yes, the same pick-ups might not sound the same in a SG compared to a LP....

Re: Alnico II

SG's sound thinner than Les Pauls...but I suspect you're not playing through Slash's big ol' Marshall! Nor do you have Slash's exact personality, touch, etc. The pickup is just a link in the chain. When it comes to copping the tone of players who use Marshall stacks, the Marshall stack is more important than the pickup.

Re: Alnico II

I have the APH in the neck of a double fat strat, and in the neck of a Dean Hardtail (PRS meets LP type tone). In both I get serious Slash tone. I would imagine that your SG would be at least similar to my DF strat.

Adjusting the height for starters will make a difference. Each guitar is different for it's sweet spot. Start with the pup up high enough so that the strings almost touch the pole pieces (adjustable screws) when you depress them at the 22nd fret. Now take a small flathead and match the radius of the pole pieces to the strings. Raise each pole piece until it just touches the string, then back it off a 1/2 turn.

Now start playing with your amp set for the type of distortion or clean that you typically use. Continue to lower the pickup in small increments until you hit a spot that sounds good to you. Move it up and down just a little to make sure you like it where it is.

To get tones similar to Slash, remember that he is playing a Silver Jubilee Marshall, which contributes. If you want sweet, singing leads like November Rain, Sweet Child and Heavens Door, you need to roll off the tone quite a bit. That will smooth out the treble and give that unique smooth sound.

Hope this helps a little.

Re: Alnico II

Get a Marshall....a real one like the pros use. :) Whole new ballgame with the right amp.

I think the JCM2000 DSL50 with the 1960AV cab will handle this Marshall tone you all keep talking about.

Yes it will. I think the thing you need to do is just get that pup adjusted to the right heitht to find the sweet spot for your guitar and amp.

Re: Alnico II

i'm not really a fand of the 2000 series, but i think it will get a nice enough tone ;)
