Re: Alnico II
I have the APH in the neck of a double fat strat, and in the neck of a Dean Hardtail (PRS meets LP type tone). In both I get serious Slash tone. I would imagine that your SG would be at least similar to my DF strat.
Adjusting the height for starters will make a difference. Each guitar is different for it's sweet spot. Start with the pup up high enough so that the strings almost touch the pole pieces (adjustable screws) when you depress them at the 22nd fret. Now take a small flathead and match the radius of the pole pieces to the strings. Raise each pole piece until it just touches the string, then back it off a 1/2 turn.
Now start playing with your amp set for the type of distortion or clean that you typically use. Continue to lower the pickup in small increments until you hit a spot that sounds good to you. Move it up and down just a little to make sure you like it where it is.
To get tones similar to Slash, remember that he is playing a Silver Jubilee Marshall, which contributes. If you want sweet, singing leads like November Rain, Sweet Child and Heavens Door, you need to roll off the tone quite a bit. That will smooth out the treble and give that unique smooth sound.
Hope this helps a little.
