The aptl-1 comes in black, and it seems like it is the perfect pup for me,but black is almost a deal breaker. Can anything be done,I can live with zebra, but would rather have a nickel cover? Thanks
You can simply buy a standard spaced SD (so it is guaranteed to fit, I'm sure a lot of standard spaced covers would fit though) nickel cover and put in on the pickup. Here are the steps:
1) Put masking tape over the slug bobbin. Doesn't need to be perfect, just as long as it covers the slugs.
2) Push pickup into the cover. You should be able to push it in until it snaps into place with the screw pole pieces level with the cover or slightly about it.
3) Make 2 small pools of solder connecting the baseplate to the cover like so:
You may not have to solder it though, as long as the cover is snug and isn't going to fall off, and is touching the base plate so the cover is grounded. Then you just wire the pickup up as normal.

Just to add to this, the guitar in question is a G&L Bluesboy. Will that one need special spacing pup and if so can you still get a nickel cover for that?
