AlnicoII neck/ Alnico V bridge? Or the other way around? - HELP!

At the moment I have a guitar loaded with two DiMarzio PAF classics. I like very much the tone of this alnicoII (wanabe, they use air technolgy) pickups. Think about them like an alnico pro or a Seth style of pickup. It isn't like they are bad but when I try duncans I allways have (much) better feelings. The main problem it is that i don't have the money right to upgrade my axe now BUT the fact is that I have a 59'n pickup laying around...

Do you think a combo with a 59neck (alnico V) with an Paf Classic bridge (alnicoII) would be good? Or may be they could be set in the other way around...

So the question is: Do you have experience with combos where you mix pickups with different magnets? Do pickups combine well?

Thanks!!

I forgot! The axe has a mahogany body with an ebony fingerboard.

If I were to choose 1, I would choose alnico II bridge and alnico V neck. Brighter neck spot, warm up the bridge pup.

When it comes to humbuckers, I tend to like alnico 2 for the neck because it seems to have less bass and sound clearer for that reason: less bass. I can go a2 or a5 for the bridge humbucker.

With single coils, I like alnico 5 for the neck and middle and I can go either way with the bridge pickup: a2 or a5.

I went this route with heritage. The bridge pup is an A2P and the neck is a jazz. The jazz isn't bassy like the 59 so I haven't had the problem that Lew is speaking of, but I see its reality in some setups. I imagine there was more than one Paul or 335 etc. that left the factory with a5 neck and a2 bridge as well as the other way around.

I think if you like the setup then that's great, there is no real rules per se on this stuff.

Mmmh, I see there are opinion from both sides. I have to say that I am a bit biased about the AlnicoV neck/AlnicoII bridge since I have the 59'n and I absolutely love its tone.

I don't fully understand whay you state Lew. You say that the alnicoII neck humbucker have less bass so they are more clear. But, for me, they lack also treble which sometimes, under some eq's, give me the impresion of muddiness. Since the 59'n has more treble (and more bass) gives me the impresion of a greater "glassiness" and so clearness.

Does this make sense?

The Hamer Monaco has a Custom (a-5) neck with a Custom Custom (a-2) Bridge. I'm very impressed with this set up.

In my main guitar, Gibson LP Standard, I run an A2P bridge and 59 neck, near perfect. Though I may pop an A2P neck in as well.

i personally like the sound of the 59 in the neck and i think it would sound good with an alnico 2 pickup in the bridge. i think a set of 59's sound a bit better but thats okay especially if it is only for now.

Thanks for the replies guys! The temptation of having this 59'n/alnicoII bridge it is getting bigger!

Wow! that's a hot one for the neck! Don't you have problems balancing the output with the bridge?

+1

My favorite combo is a Seth Lover bridge (A2) with a '59 neck (A5) and it's amazing !

The Custom's a ceramic loaded pickup.

I like Alnico II humbuckers at the neck as well, at least in Gibson style guitars. :burnout:
