Alpha Neck Pickup

Hey guys, have a question for anyone who might know. I have a JP100D with the Alpha/Omega set in it. Bridge sounds completely amazing! The neck position however seems to be lacking pick attack and is a bit muddy with fast picking. I have a prs with an emg85 in the neck and a strat with a lil'screamin demon in the neck and both have far more attack. I'm somewhat confused because this pickup is supposed to have good attack. Is there anything I may be missing or does this pickup just naturally have less attack than the others I mentioned?

Re: Alpha Neck Pickup

Tried adjusting the height? Too high or too low will ruin your experience with it.

Also, does it have a separate volume control or shared with the bridge pickup? You might have a bust potentiometer somewhere.
If you want to be really sure, try soldering the pickup straight to the output jack and check the tone. If it comes to life, something's wrong along the signal path.

Re: Alpha Neck Pickup

Thanks for the reply! I have tried adjusting the height up and down and still wasn't able to get the attack I was looking for. Both pickups are wired to one volume without the tone pot connected. I can't figure why it lacks the same attack as my other neck pickups. I figured it should have at least as much as the 85.

Re: Alpha Neck Pickup

The Alpha should have tons of attack and not sound muddy at all. I am wondering if something is wrong...it has the most attack of pretty much any neck pickup I've tried, generally too much for me. Can you wire it directly to the jack? Are both coils certainly working?

Re: Alpha Neck Pickup

That's what everyone was saying and it's what prompted me to get this set. I'm gonna check the wiring and coils more in-depth today.

Re: Alpha Neck Pickup

Both coils are working and I got a bit better attack out of it adjusting it up higher. I'm going to put some fresh strings on today and see what that does. The lil'screamin demon kills it though in the pick attack. I know the demon is noted for that but it still surprises me since it's on a 250 volume and tone and the Alpha is on just a 500 volume.

Re: Alpha Neck Pickup

Do you happen to have a meter to see if the output on it is right?

Re: Alpha Neck Pickup

Strange because the alpha is a pretty bridge sounding neck pickup. It must be the pickup height or wiring.

Re: Alpha Neck Pickup

That is about right. I am wondering if there is a wiring issue here.

Re: Alpha Neck Pickup

I have the Alpha/Omega set in all of my main guitars (both wired to a single volume) and there is definitely no shortage of attack on either pickup. I think Mincer is right about there being some sort of wiring issue here.

Re: Alpha Neck Pickup

The entire problem turned out being dead strings. I removed them to install the pickups and put them back on because it was late. After changing to a fresh set the problem is gone....thankfully. :)
