Alpha/Omega 7-string Set

I was wondering if anyone has heard more specific information on when the 7-string version of the Mark Holcomb Alpha/Omega set will be available. I have the six string set and would love to get them for my 7 before my band goes into the studio. I've talked to both Mark and the guys and Duncan, but all I've heard is "soon" and nothing more than that.

MJ said something about an 8-string set. maybe for that 8-string guitar he's shown on Instagram.

Well, it was a Custom Shop Pickup, so you could probably get one done through there.

The original 6-string run was limited to 200 sets, so I don't think you can actually order them from the Custom Shop anymore (though I could be wrong about that). Also, in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vw2t54mkpkI Mark actually mentions that the 7 and 8 string sets will be regular production models when they're released. I'm trying to figure out when they actually will be released to determine if it's worth it to commission a 7-string set from the Custom Shop (if I am even able to), or just to wait for the production models to be released.

Oh I see. Well, if SD was going to release them as production models in the near future, my best bet is that they won't be announced until NAMM 2017 or just before and then released to the public at NAMM.

Re: Alpha/Omega 7-string Set

Considering Mark's new PRS SE signature carries the Alpha and Omega pickups, wouldn't that mean the pickup is already fit to be a production model?

It would seem so, but my understanding is that the ones in his signatures are actually the Custom Shop ones. The only ones he confirmed will be regular production models are the 7 and 8 string sets. I would assume that means the 6 will be as well, but there's no official confirmation on that yet.

The ones in his core line signatures are (were?) Custom Shop, and part of its limited run. But I doubt his SE line, which is supposed to be cost-efficient, is gonna have custom shop pickups...

Yeah, those pickups would account for 1/2 the final cost of the instrument. SD may be doing a production run for PRS the way they did the 6 string Nazghul/ Sentient pickups for Schecter, just until the pickups become part of the full line.

Re: Alpha/Omega 7-string Set

The thing I'm most concerned about is spending the extra money on a custom shop set of them if I don't need to. Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy with my 6-string custom shop set; they're the best pickups I've ever played. However, I'm sure the production model will still be great, and if I can save myself a good bit of money, I'd like to do so.

Re: Alpha/Omega 7-string Set

not a bad point. nor would I.

for example, before Dustie Waring went to Mojotone, I waited to see what was going to happen. there was a time last year when it could have been custom shop or it could have been production. I could have easily asked for what Dustie was currently using out of the custom shop, and I'd have ended up with a rare set...but not a signature set. for my goals, that'd have done me little good.

or by contrast, how many limited release items have gotten a wider release, or become more accessible than originally made to be? WLH. Black Winter. Alpha-Omega. Prototype JB. do you think people might wait a while and the Skinnerburst will be a production model too? :D

Very good point. I'll bet Duncan could make a KILLING if they did the Skinner Burst set in regular production. Bonamassa's popularity seems higher than it ever has been right now in the guitar world.

Re: Alpha/Omega 7-string Set

The problem with doing a set like that in production is that you'd have to get rid of all of the 'custom' touches that make this set unique- they couldn't be aged, and would have to fit into a certain production method. You might get the sound, but not the look or overall care from the Custom Shop.

some guys on that MLP thread seem to be liking the ThroBak covers on their Skinnerburst more than the ones that come with it. those guys seem to be the desired target crowd for things like that.

aside from all the articles about the "relic" fad being on the backside, most people that are interested already know how to age their hardware.
