Alt-5 anyone?

Hey peeps,
I've got an Alt8 but the string pull really isnt doing it for me. I've been reading people creating JB8's and Custom8's by swapping the magnet for an a8.
Has anyone swapped the Alt8 magnet for something else? An alnico 5 perhaps?

Re: Alt-5 anyone?

I was thinking the same thing, but then I figured the Alt8 was specifically designed for the alnico 8 magnets. There are plenty of a5 pickups on the market and everything has their place I guess. Is the string pull really that bad? Have you tried lowering the pickup a tad?

Re: Alt-5 anyone?

yeah its true the alt 8 was designed for A8 but i dont see any prob with switching the mag, do it and report back, if u dont like it put the old mag back and sell it. No coil is designed to only sound good with one magnet, hence why we have the custom series and the jb/distortion

Re: Alt-5 anyone?

Yeah, string pull was an issue. I lowered the pickup to get some sustain back...but i lost alot of gain!
I might be hte only one on this forum whos dissapointed wiht the alt 8!

Uhhhh..no. I had one for a week and pulled it out. Just not my cup-o-tea...

Re: Alt-5 anyone?

yeah, it seems like everything we guitarists think of that should be cool 'in theory' is just not as effective as what they were usin in the 50's and 60's.

I think the A5 would change the tonal characteristic of the Alternative 8 pretty drastically man. Aren't alnico 8's all high-output with tons of mids and stuff? Cuz A5's are known for lowend and treble but not mids...
