Thinking about putting a alternative 8 bridge in my neck position for my Jackson Kelly J's with a coil tap, what u guys think? Paired with a dd8
I'd like to try a jb I've never played but what I've heard I've liked! And metalthrashingmad would have been a good one haha! But I'm really not a lead player or anything but I guess it would be to have something that'll cut good when I do, do a lead, and maybe something for a clean
the Alt-8 has a very high output. but it does have a lot of cut to it, so it would be very articulate in a neck position. don't be fooled by the tone chart, it's not going to even out to where it'll match up with a JB or a DD in the bridge... it has a lot more presence in the upper mids and in the highs that are going to make it be more in your face.
what are you looking for from splitting the Alt-8 coils? a different sort of dirty sound or something for a clean tone? I have one split in a bridge position and it's more sharp sounding when split than a lot of others.
if you want a DDn to go up against that DD8, I have one I'm looking to move.
That said, in a 24 fret guitar, I don't think it matters what pickup you use, you're never going to get an ideal lead tone from a neck pickup.
agreed.
I wouldn't do it, had one in the bridge pos of my strat - darker than a JB/distortion by quite a bit.
Would be a bit messy in the neck position, and that's to say the least.
I have an alt8 sitting on my home studio desk.
Got nothing on Saturday , I may as well go where no man has gone before and chuck it in the neck of my guitar I'm still fusing around with a neck pu to match a bkp warpig.
I don't expect it to be good. But damn. Someone has to try it.
I've never tried a jb either but I would like too, I have a dd8 in the bridge and I'm gonna try the alt8 in the neck with a coil tap! Worst case I don't like it and I can put something else in it
I did it last year. Leads were nice but no other option than fat, and it was too thick for anything else but leads imo, given it's already bass and mid heavy character in the bridge. Adding dirt just accentuated all this. And the output in series was enough higher than the invader bridge I'd had at the time to where it was a noticeable mismatch, even after messing with height. In parallel the output was better matched, but doing so made it feel a little flat.
