Alternative 8 instead of JB in Charvel San Dimas?

Re: Alternative 8 instead of JB in Charvel San Dimas?

I'm curious how a PATB would sound in my Les Paul. It would probably look cool, but the string spacing might not be a good match.

Not sure of the tone but I have an Alt 8 trembucker in my Trad Pro II and the poles line up perfectly. Depends on the LP.

The Alt 8 would certainly add more body at the expense of upper mids. I would define it as a 'heavier' pickup, more towards the 90's than the 80's, if that makes any sense.
Agreed here. I have had the Alt 8 Crazy 8 Custom 8 and a JB + also ran a JB 8 in the same superstrat ( Swamp ash bodied USA Washburn 1995 Grover Jackson era MG 100) so I have a little experience here. The Alt is really tight modern sounding and fat. It sings well for solos but doesn't cut like the JB or JB 8 will.
It's a solid wall of sound that stays clear and defined kinda like the JB on a BIG dose of steroids. I think Mincer nailed it in that it is more geared toward those scooped heavy 90's tones than the 80's.

This has me wondering... How does the Alt 8 compare to a Custom 8? So far, my Custom 8 is the hugest sounding pickup I know of, at least in a Les Paul.
The Alt is smoother warmer rounder and more singing as well as hotter than a Custom 8. It's also more "open" and "organic" sounding.

Oh, but for those scooped tones, it's sublime.

Man... I've actually never wanted to even try another pickup for the past few years since I put an Alnico 8 in my Custom, but now the Alt 8 is sounding more like something I'd try. The first pickup I tried in place of the original 500T was a Burstbucker Pro I borrowed from a friend. I thought it sucked, so then I tried the Custom. Thought that was super great, enough that I sold my 500T. Then I found out about the Custom 8 and never looked back. The only thing I've ever even considered doing was trying the Alnico 5 or the original ceramic in there, but I never even did that. I really dig Alnico 8.

Thanks a lot for the responses!

I´m a little busy now, but when I have some time I´ll get it and I´ll post my impressions.

How about a JB8? That pickup is wicked! It's everything the stock JB should have been and more..
