Alternative 8

I'm thinking about swapping out the Invader in my Washburn V with something else. It has a mahogany body, maple neck/rosewood board and an original floyd. The neck p/u is a stock Dimarzio SD, which I like alot. I like the Invader, and use it in parallel quite a bit as well. My issue is the lack of highs/harmonics. It's a bit "blanketed" sounding, and squeels and harmonics are a bit dead. What can I expect from the SH-15? How does it work in parallel? I usually use this guitar for heavier stuff, tuned 1/2 to 1 hole step down, sometimes drop C#. The amp is a Peavey 6505+ (plenty o' gain). Thanks much

Re: Alternative 8

Alt 8 is nice and tight, plenty of output, and takes downtuning quite well. (I usually do open C and open B.)

Re: Alternative 8

I have an ALt8 in my Washburn WM24v (mahog) and it is amazing! Sounds huge and has big low end and plenty of cut.

Sounds good with the jazz neck, but I dont have parallel or anything

Re: Alternative 8

For me the Alt8 lacked a little bit in the highs, a little bit too overwound.

How about the PATB's? The are made for Floyd guitars.

I had a PATB-1 which is a hell of a modern sounding humbucker (something between a JB and a Custom) and currently i am sporting a PATB-3, a more growly but more trad PAF like. All of them deliver a great open bass, not boomy but clear.

Re: Alternative 8

hows the midrange on the alt8?

quite abundant! To me the alt 8 is similar to a Tone Zone in that it has a big low end huge thru the middle and has a nice top but not cutting, but is less likely to get muddy and has more character. Its a great pup to put in a thin sounding guitar or just make a reg guitar sound huge!

Re: Alternative 8

Hey Jol,
I am considering changing the bridge pup out of my Strat HSS to a JB to help fatten up the sound. Frank Falbo at SD agreed that the JB would be great in the bridge but noted if I would like more power to try the Alt.8. I think my Strat sounds a bit thin. Opinion? How do you think it will do when split? Sorry for piggy-backing your thread...: popworm:

LOL! Im not Jol. I wish I was. I am using a quote from him.

Either would be good. JB would have more cut for leads and stuff, but Alt 8 is huge for power chords and rhythym

Re: Alternative 8

Would the alt 8 be and improvement in the lead department compared to the Invader? I like a fat pup with good mid grind and non-ice pick highs. And I wire everything series/parallel, so that's important too.

bloodrose, your inbox is full, lol. heres what i was going to send you:

hey man, quick question. saw your post on the alt 8 - and you mentioned it helping a thin guitar sound better. do you think this would help an acrylic guitar sound fatter/better? i had good luck with the C5, but the highs were still a TOUCH bright

The Alt 8 is tighter, bigger and chunkier than a c5. C5 is great! I would run one in a Les Paul and they sound fantastic in an SG! But those can be dark sounding guitars, so the highs on the c5 work.. The ALt8 has less highs, its eq focus is low mid to high mids, but it doesnt sound "middy" like a custom custom.. Best thing to do is try it.. If youve ever heard a tone zone, its kinda like that, but with more mojo. IMO

Crunchy,
No, these things dont get muddy.. They have a huge clear low end..
