Alternative LP

So, I've learned I love the tone of a good LP over any other axe, but, IMO, they suk donkey balls when you play anything over the 12th fret. It's definitely do-able to play stuff over the 12th fret, but it's a major PITA (if you don't know the acronym, pm me).

So, I'm thinking of getting a carvin cs6 in blackburst with a quilt top, giant frets, zero neck heal and with some metal pups.I love the look/feel/tone of LP's, but I hate the playability of LP's. I cannot get down with the fat necks of Gibbos. What should I be looking for? I have very short/thin fingers that prefer Gibbo scales.

I already know the amswer to this, but, I'm not sure. I'd love to have a 7 or 8 string axe with a 25in scale on the top 5 strings. I'd like a 27in scale, but only for the bottom strings.

Re: Alternative LP

I've never had a problem playing an LP over the 12th fret, & I wear my axe lowwww & I have small hands.

Get an EC-1000! You get 2 more frets!

Re: Alternative LP

Buy an LP and......
Have the neck reprofiled ( sanded down ) to whatever shape and feel you like.
It's not uncommon and it makes for the perfect fitting / feeling neck.
It would be kinda sad if you missed out on the experience of owning an LP.

Carvin is the 1st guitar that came to mind when I read your description. my only reservation is the electronics. I'd head straight to RS Guitarworks and get an LP electronics upgrade kit and then pick up a Duncan Pearly Gates set. but hey, people change out the electronics on $3000+ Gibsons all the time.

+1, if you get a long tenon neck you can shave the heel perfectly smooth, I've seen a few on ebay where people have done it and it seems to work pretty well.

Re: Alternative LP

60's slim taper. Know someone with 'stubby' fingers and can move good on this neck.

Re: Alternative LP

How much money do you have to throw down. If you've got the bones ($3,500) you could get one of these that I think is pretty sweet:

Re: Alternative LP

Have you tried an SG?

Similar tone, totally different feel.

I totally spaced out on that one. I've wanted an SG for a long time, I'll have to get one I guess.

I've seen those and if they didn't have the floyd, I'd find a way to get one.

Re: Alternative LP

Dude you just invented the PRS

Grooving on the PRSness eh Immortal?

Def. an option. Check out a Singlecut. I haven't played tons of their models, but even my Soapbar can get convincing LP/humbucker tones.

Plus PRS guitars are good at the metal and high gain thing too.

Re: Alternative LP

Just as another alternative, I'll throw my current axe out there:

Much slimmer and lighter than an LP, chambered body for a lot of warmth and sustain, and the neck is WAY playable up to the top fret. The last fret feels just as good and bends just as far as any other fret on the board. Scale is 24-7/8" so it's closer to a LP than a Strat. Plus it's a 5-way pickup toggle so you get a lot of neat coil tap options.

If you're set on the metal pickups, you can get them too:

I like mine. :)

Re: Alternative LP

Nice taylor, vetteboy. I'd love one of those, but they're pretty pricey. Same thing with the PRS. I really dig PRS guitars, but they're outta my league.

I'm gonna have to get an sg one of these days. I'd love black standard or maybe an edwards or tokai.

Re: Alternative LP

I'd try a Washburn Idol.

Yeah, the washburns kill
wi66pro is $680 new, has a slimmer neck than an LP, carved top, duncans, etc etc
or go all the way up to the top of the line for a little over $2000
they also have many models with EMGs if thats your style

And by the way, I hate you guys. I was very happy with my current guitars. However, I have for a while kinda wanted a tobacco burst LP (or copy)
So I go to the washburn site just to check whats new, and see that they are doing tobacco burst on these now. Total GAS. You guys suck. its all your fault
Of course they have the wi66 in "tobacco burst" as seen here but that really doesnt do it, the wi440 does though

Of course it is the $1300 model, which is more than all my stuff combined.

Re: Alternative LP

that new model looks gorgeous. I have a wine WI66 pro that sounds fantastic with a custom 5 and pearly gates. The neck joint is next to orgasmic, the jumbo fret feels great, and the build quality is most excellent.

Do you still have that $1,500 you talked about in your other thread?

If you're shrewd you can pick up a singlecut for around that.
