Alternative rock amp for $1000-ish or under?

An amp that has enough gain to play powerchords if need be under distortion or overdrive and sound thick enough, but also has a good enough clean so you can roll back the volume or set a semi-clean sound and get definition and clarity. Kind of like an Oasis sound or STP sound where you can play overdriven open chords, but have enough clarity to pick all the notes and have it not turn into mush. Hope that makes sense.

Get a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and a Fulltone OCD. A match made in heaven and can do everything you're looking for.

This is a Hot Rod Deluxe (40W, 1x12) with humbuckers.

Just like that, it sounds sooo good already.
Now think how it can sound with your fav. OD,Dist, or Fuzz pedal !!!

Well, STP's Deleo played on a modified Demeter preamp into a VHT power amp. Those Demeter's, if you can find one, are over $2000.

I've heard this guy playing through a Laney Tony Iommi head and he was getting that really lush open chord sound that you're talking about. In the same vein as the STP sound. You should def check one out!

Used Mesa Single Rectifier or Rectoverb, series II. load it with a pair of EL 34s and you can cover a lot of ground - great for the "semi-cleans" you mentioned, moderate overdrive, and hi-gain insanity :)

higher build quality and more reliable than the Fender Hot rod series in my experience

Aye. Do yourself a favor and raise the $1000 bar a littlebit. Try a Vox AC30. It has that tone right out the box.

I've got a HR Deville, and while the OD side is *passable*, it's really nothing special IMO. Now, push the clean channel with (insert favorite OD pedal here) and you've got something special.

EDIT: It's also not too apparent from that video, but based on his settings on the amp it is up LOUD. Loud enough to play in a band setting for sure. I'm not sure in what kind of setting the OP is going to use the amp he's searching for.

If you look, you can find a Mesa Stiletto for that price. They're around $1800 or so new, but I got mine for about $1100, and it's awesome.

I'm thinking of letting it go to downsize my investment a bit, and might even be in kind of the same boat, so I'll likely get a used something. I'd really like to find a decently priced Mesa Lonestar, or something along those lines.

Not to derail this thread, but anybody have any thoughts on the same specs, with a decent trem or vibrato built in?

Do you have any clips of the Mesa ?
Or can you make some clips ?

Re: Alternative rock amp for $1000-ish or under?

I don't currently have anything, but I'll see if I can mess with it a bit tomorrow. They're great amps. Mine is the Stiletto Trident, which is the selectable 50/150 watt version. Great articulation for cleans, and some nice powerful overdrive on the crunch channels.

I'll check out this post again tomorrow, and if I can put anything down, I'll post or email it, either way.

Any mesa combo should do fine. The Stiletto, Rectoverb and Express are all great choices, and can be had at that price used.

How has anyone not mentioned the Bogner Alchemist yet?

It's a fantastic amp that can get more than heavy enough for STP, alt rock sounds and it has a great clean channel to boot... AND it's actually in his price range. It really doesn't get better for around a grand.
