Alumitone lace sensor with SD

Re: Alumitone lace sensor with SD

I had a couple of those. They are indeed unique sounding pickups. They are a bit cold and, to me, didn't have the dynamic feel that good singles do. They are dead quiet, as far as noise goes, and are super lightweight. Just swapping 2 of 'em into my guitar made the whole thing noticeably lighter. They also have a good extended treble response. However, when they say, "more output", I don't know what they are talking about. Maybe a touch more than a 5.5k vintage Strat single...I found them to be pretty weak. The other two Duncan's you mentioned would seem like switching to a flame-thrower.

Ps-if you are pickguard mounting, they won't fit a std. Strat oval. You will have to cut/file a bit to square the corners.

Re: Alumitone lace sensor with SD

I had a set, as well, but they were the hum-sized pups. If you're looking for power and bite, these are not the pups for you. I agree with Guston's appraisal. Sterile and very stiff. If they were that revolutionary and fastastic, they'd be everywhere.

Have a look on YouTube for Godin's Richmond Dorchester. That guitar comes stock with the HB sized Alumitone pickups. I wouldn't say that they're sterile unless you mean that there's no noise at all. They have a chimey clean sound - maybe somewhere in the Rickenbacker range of tones.

Thank you gus for the feedback.

Yeah, I saw the you tube video, nad I thought it sounded and looked nice, but I was not secure, the sound depends on a lot of factors. The thing is that I want to try different sounds combined I would like to combine hot and moderate single coil sized HBs so that I can even use a hybrid coil selection (one coil from a hot PU another from a moderate PU). The idea is to try really different (tonewise and dynamicwise) PUs but with not so different output levels, mainly impedance, otherwise their combination would tend to the lower impedance PU a lot.

Up to know I am considering Hot rails, Lil Screaming (both for bridge) and lil 59, cool rails (or hot stack), both for neck. So I will have two HB at each position allowing me to have the original PUs or a hybrid at each position. I would like to try the parallel axis stack (single coil size) but its impedance (and output) is too low for combining it, for instance, with lil 59.

I am still looking for the nice setup. Any suggestion will be welcome.
