Am I nuts?

I have a guitar with a couple of Rio Grande humbuckers (BBQ & Genuine Texas) and the neck pickup is waaay too hot for me to get the kind of clean tones I'm looking for. As a result, I'm considering a pickup swap.

The combo I'm considering is an Alnico II Pro in the neck and an EVH in the bridge. I really like the clips of the APH-1 (clear, sparkley and rich) and the reviews of the EVH make it sound like just what I'm looking for in a bridge pickup.

My question is whether this is a nutso combination. I figure since neither is a high-output pickup, there won't be an issue with volume mismatch between the pickups. Would anyone care to speculate about what the pickups might sound like together?

i think it might be a really cool combo, never tried it but it should be good. the aph at 7.6k should balance well with the 9k-ish '78 and i think youll be pleasently supprised at how they sound in the middle, especially clean

Thanks! Dunno if it makes a difference in pickup choice but the guitar has a trem, chambered mahogany body with a very thick (15/16") maple top, mahogany neck and a bois de rose fretboard.

I'm surprised you found the Genuine Texas model to be too hot. Isn't that Rio Grande's PAF copy? It shouldn't be any hotter than a '59 model.

I've got the APH in the neck position of every HB guitar I own. It is my favorite neck bucker....followed by the Seth. It has great clarity, sounds awsome clean and stays articulate even under massive gain.

The EVH should be a really cool match with the APH. I've got a CC paired with an APH in a heavy double fat strat, and it's a killer combo. Interestingly, the only bridge pup that I would consider in that guitar other than the CC is the EVH. I'll pick one up used someday when the price and color are right.

I think that will rock in your guitar.
