Am I the only one using KT77's?

I tried a set of JJ KT77's in my Marshall, and I'm sold!
I like them better than the EL34, or EL34L.
More bottom, nice mids and a bit of chime on the top end. A bit less aggressive than the EL34L series, but a bit more aggressive than a regular EL34.
Anyone else tried them?

i"ve heard the KT77's are better than a lot of new production el34's in some applications.
Nothing beats old stock el34's of course

Same here. I'm about due for a tube change, and have heard mainly good things about KT77s. Anything more you can tell us about the sound? How far does it deviate from the "standard" EL34 sound?

It's all gonna depend on which EL34 you are talking about and which KT77 you are talking about...

Re: Am I the only one using KT77's?

The only KT77 I've seen are either JJ or NOS.
My Marshall is a 2x12 combo, and I wanted more bottom end, these really seem to help.
I do like the tone better than the EL's I've used, but I can't exactly put my finger on why.
Maybe smoother, and bigger sounding.
Note: they are a bit longer than regualr EL34

Yeah, guess I should've been more specific about EL34's. My only experience is with current production types. I've got EH EL34's, but I thought that might be too limiting for the OP; he may not have experience with them.

I also assumed that since the OP said he had JJ's, that'd be his point of comparison. I think that's fair.

(And thanks for the response, Marvar. I know it probably eventually does come down to "Gotta hear it for yourself.")

Hmm... Totally not enough info there.

where did you set the EL34 idle current with respect to their measured plate voltage... vs the KT77s of course?
In other words, this is all meaningless unless we know what the power tube's idling power curve was set.
I mean, if the original EL34s were just soft, idling at +22watts each or ready to blow... any new tube set with the idle current set where the power tubes were now idling at say, 14-16 watts will sound totally different and maybe way better.
So any specs you can add to your comments would be appreciated.

Re: Am I the only one using KT77's?

I set my amp bias as close to 70% as I can get. No matter what tube I'm using.
The kt77 is a 25 watt tube, just like the regular EL34, and unlike the EL34L which is a 30 watt tube. I've used both in my amp.
The plate voltage runs 490-495 in my amp.

It wasn't my purpose to get too technical in my original thread, I just wanted to share my findings with other.
The KT 77 may not be for everyone, but it works for me.
If you want more info on them I suggest you get with Bob at Eurotubes, or being an amp builder, you may want to just try some for yourself.
