Good point, a plain basic EVH tone may be as easy as a used Ebay 5150. But I think it's how close you want to get. Yes the basic elements are a Super Lead, a 4x12 with quality greenback or g12H. (I think greenbacks break up too soon) a frankenstrat with a humbucker, phase 90, flanger, and yes most everyone cheats with a distortion pedal.

Then as you get closer what kind of speaker, what tubes in the Marshall, what humbucker, which of the many phase 90's, an old or new flanger? If you go to the Metoramps board, there are several components that sort of make up the "recipe" for the amp itself. THOSE are the detailed questions those guys are asking.

I've gotten the 'Brown Sound' with>Ash Strat/78'>MXR 6 band or TS9>Script 90> cranked
2555 [output vol as master]>Space Echo in the loop. Greenbacks.

Im actually surprised Im getting this support on this topic...

Som many people seem to just hold this tone SO high and treat it like it's some kind of magical thing thats impossible to reproduce.

I always dug the tone so don't get it twisted, this is not at all a slam on the brown sound, Ed or anything like tha it just seems that witih a PAF a Plexi and a Vairac you're there...everything else involved is just like a little salt and pepper

Plus like I mentioned in my original post and Olin mentioned as well...I have a strong feeling that Ted Templeman is responceable for a larg portion of the recorded magic!

I am totally with you Christian. I think it can be nailed with any number of commercially available fuzz boxes as well. The thing everyone forgets IMO is that ed just did "whatever" it was to get the sound. He wasn't a pup snob like we are. He used what he had and did whaqtever he needed to do. Slap a PAF in the strat and work any sort of hot rodded Marshall and there ya go.

Marshall doesn't even need to be hot rodded. His weren't

Where's the insert fart noise thingy? Man, I've been listenin to Eddie all my life. He's my favorite player of all time. I've never tried to play like him and I've never tried to sound like him. I don't care. I'm 41 and still tryin to find my own tone and playin style man. What I said ain't got nothin to do with the original post. It just blows my mind how many folks get over obsessed with nothin all that special soujndwise. Anyways, I feel like I'm diggin a hole. i dug where the original post came from.

Speaking of original post. Has this world gotten so lazy we can't even write the term "original post"? I get do torn up sometimes seein all these initials and crap. If a dude like my drunkass can write the actual words of "I don't know", original poster/post, eat crap or whatever.....then surely yall can. I get tired of tryin to decipher all that crap man.

I just think it comes down to some people loving and wanting Ed's sound. People did the
same with Hendrix ,Page and others. But like Jolly said,finding your own tone is important
too.

I think you guys are missing an important part of the puzzle. Sure its great to have all the equipment but I believe since you're talking about pick attack and so on which is important. If you really wanna get close don't forget about the pick itself you use. Ed used fairly thin picks back in the day and still does. Picks do make a big difference in your tone. His signature picks are .60mm, which to some would feel like playing with a piece of paper cause I know a lot of people use fairly heavy picks. I think just going out and getting Fender Classic Celluloid mediums is a good start. So you can experiment in that area also what works best for you. More to think about huh :banghead:

Ed used Fender medium & heavy picks and also has stated he used metal picks early on which he
claimed caused his cancer from holding the pick in his mouth at times.

The metal pick comment he made is complete BS. He never used metal picks, just look at Van Halen Store online they sell a ton of his old picks all the way back to 1986. He got cancer from smoking which is much more likely. He used Fender medium and heavy in the beginning but then switched to lighter picks sometime in the 80's and has been on them ever since.

Yeah, he used the Fender's when he was good. But you never know about the metal pick. Ed liked to experiment. There were people using them during that time like Rory Gallagher.
