Amp for Sludge

Re: Amp for Sludge

Also, +1 on all of the hovercraft suggestions. These things are Doom/Sludge/Stoner in a box. I also really like their "ionostrofear" fuzz pedals.

Re: Amp for Sludge

I play sludge and doom only... thats why I got an orange thunderverb 50! the best. endorsed by mastodon and down.

Re: Amp for Sludge

My heroin comment was only 66% joking... the best sludge bands just use whatever amp and a gnarly fuzz box.

Of course when i think sludge i think EYEHATEGOD and weedeater.

Re: Amp for Sludge

Those Hovercrafts are made for this stuff, but anything loud and vintage with a filthy distortion/fuzz will get you there.

I disagree.

IMO, the only requirement for an amp is for it to be loud. The rest is personal taste.

Re: Amp for Sludge

Yep, you don't need no Hovercraft, you just need loud, a decent pedal, heavy strings, a low tuning and a decent neck humbucker. Some reefer probably wouldn't hurt.

Finally. I was running to the end of this thread to say pretty much exactly this.

There's a reason guys tour with those 300-watt Sunn Beta Leads and Coliseum heads, and it's not for their natural overdrive.

All you need for sludge/doom/stoner is a de-tuned guitar through a good-sounding fuzz into a clean amp with tons of headroom.

Re: Amp for Sludge

If you're looking for cheap sludge and you get your distortion from the amp, try a Laney AOR Pro Tube 50 or 100. I wouldn't buy a Marshall for sludge but If use one if I already owned it. Most Marshalls aren't bassy enough.

With low-output pickups on an AOR with the gain set moderate and a boost pedal Sabbath is easy. And there are tons of scuzz and bass that you can dial in from there. There's a bass boost that can make it entirely unlistenable, if that's your pleasure.

Guys . . . does anyone know how good of a guitar-amp the Ampeg SVT 3 PRO bass amp + SVT 15e cab will be ?

I know the Ampeg V4 makes for a killer guitar amp, but what about the SVT 3 PRO ?

Re: Amp for Sludge

I played with a bass player who used one, doesn't strike me as something suitable without a pedal. Unfortunately I never heard it with a pedal in front. It's def not much like a V4.

Re: Amp for Sludge
