Amp, Guitar, and some general inquiry from a beginner

Re: Amp, Guitar, and some general inquiry from a beginner

I picked up my RG4 yesterday
After a year of just hanging on the wall
It was in tune

But soon as you dive bomb one time
All the strings at a bit flat
Pull up on the bar, back in tune

I still think a hard tail would be better for a beginner
As it doesn't have all the additional quirks of a trem system

Re: Amp, Guitar, and some general inquiry from a beginner

True but this guitar is also free, and a tech should be able to address trem issues.

I tried the Boss Katana once and it is a great amp for starters I would have loved to have back in my starting days, I think a speaker swap can make it even better. For blues I would say just crank the gain in the crunch channel and use your guitar volume knob and fingers touch to go from clean to lead. The other channels can certainly do metal. Don't worry too much about FX and don't get obsesses with tone chasing too early, just practice a lot, play live and develop your style.

About the guitar, if it has the option to split the humbuckers then maybe you can try that but again don't get obsessed to soon with tone chasing. If you don't feel comfortable with its sound and really need to change then get a different guitar. For top versatility either HSS or HSH guitars will work, it really depends on what kind of blues tones you prefer from the neck pickup but I guess once you get to that point another post will come :)

I agree on the hardtail for upstarts.

Once there's a base of general guitar and tuning knowledge then by all means everyone who's into rock and metal should try a full floater.

Just wanted to express my appreciation to you. I'm also green as the OP and have been browsing forums for some time and saw your other posts which were also informative and very useful. So, I got your advice and bought Katana as my first amp. Oh well, it's just awesome what can I say more. It now makes me even more passionate about music every time I play with it. Thank you, my friend!

A couple of thoughts:

1) I've no experience with the Katana, so it might share a lot of attributes which I'm going to mention for the THR10. The latter is a VERY good practice amp, and can get loud enough for someone in the next room to tell you to turn it down. It comes down to what you mean by the full immersive experience, and what your neighbors say :) The THR has USB functional, aux for playing along with tracks, doubles as a straight speaker, you can tweak parameters and doesn't take a lotta room. Sounds are pretty decent, if you like what's pre-programmed. The THR10 is already setup with a nice blues, clean and metal tone too.

2) If you don't want the tuning hassle of a Floyd at the beginning, you can always lock it down or put a block under it to hardtail it. You'll still need to learn how to restring one, but it's not that dramatic.

3) As everyone else said, you can play most genres on most guitars. Though Pink Floyd on a Dean ML might look a little weird :) However, as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gcPdeL4Dnc shows its not the axe, it's the chops!

By the way - a wipe down with GHS Fast Fret or something like it will increase the life of the strings significantly. Get religion about doing that!

ha forget totally about Fast Fret. OMG -I used to lather that crap on in 1990s

OP -Ibanez RG and Kantana means you are already have the right idea. That's probably one of the best starting combos anyone could suggest.
