Amp Help

I'm a beginner player and got a Crate GX-15 amp to get started. It's just not cutting it (surprise, surprise) and am thinking of getting a different amp.

From what I've seen & heard, seems tubes are the way to go. So I have a few questions:

What is the difference between a tube amp and a valve state amp?

What are the differences of having a hybrid SS / tube vs. all tube?

Pros / Cons of each with regard to sound, versatility and maintainability

I don't think I need more than 30W or so since I'm just playing at home.

Any recommendations are welcome. I don't want to spend too much, maybe a couple hundred bucks.

Thanx!

With all due respect, I don't think you're going to come up with a decent tube amp for that kind of money. However, you might consider a modeling amp. Line 6 makes a series called Spider that are great little amps for not a lot of money. I picked up an early model Spider about 4 years ago for about $350. You can find them for less than that now.

Thanks for being honest about my expectations. That being the case, can you recommend a decent SS amp?

Re: Amp Help

Line 6's Spider 112 or 210 model. 50 watts, either a one 12' inch speaker or 2 ten inch speakers. Both great for around the house. Yes, 50 watts is more than you really need for that, but they're killer sounding amps, and who knows? You might need be gigging down the road.
