I'll occasionally throw up a clip and see if you can guess if it's a real amp or software amp.

Remember, every clip will have some kind of production on it (read: studio sauce)... so it's "mix ready".

I'll eventually reveal the answer.

And the answer is: my Marshall JTM45RI (back when I had modded it to '66 JTM45 config)!!! REAL AMP

I'm going to guess real amp. Because I think I hear pre-amp or mic capsule distortion on the intro, and I hear what sounds like room reflections on the lead tracks. But of course, all of that can be done with software, so who knows. I'm not listening on studio speakers in a control room, so it's unlikely I could hear the details that matter. It's a fun experiment anyway; doesn't matter.

One thing that might be interesting, for guys that have a studio setup currently, is if you provided the high resolution track (are you working at 192khz?) they could bring into their DAW and listen on their monitors and see if they can tell the difference.

The "distortion" you're hearing in the intro comes from the guitar itself (strat with single coils); the notes occasionally ever-so-slightly fretting out on the low E.

The lead track has a ~150ms delay on it to give a faux doubling vibe. Uli has stated that he doubled (for real) most things including solos to thicken up things, because the stock strat is of course thin sounding.

My entire PC/DAW is set to 24bit - 48kHz.

.mp3 is a lossy format, I could mix down into .wav or .flac, but that of course makes the file size much bigger.

You should do an "acoustic or not" series, where you play an electric guitar amplified or unplugged and see how many people can guess the difference correctly :lmao:

I am voting real amp in this case. With some protest though. It is very hard to tell with the full mix going on pretty much from the intro. There is no way to listen to or hear the nuance of whether it was a software version or a real amp. Also not knowing what amp it is doesn't help. It sounds kind of like a small open-back combo to me. If it is a software amp, I will say you did well in hiding the limitations and masking the usual tells. A trick I have seen some do is take a software amp and then play it back through a real cab that is then mic'd to try and fool the audience ( a re-amp if you will ). But my initial reaction, in this case, is real amp.

I voted software, but not sure why. I listened to it multiple times, loud surround and the cans. It consistently sounds awesome!

A real amp through a load and IRs is impossible to tell to me, actually, I'm not sure I can tell at all either way, I think the feel is the biggest thing to using a real amp through speakers vs a model, and I haven't played through a real amp at any decent volume in years.
