Amp Rental Day! (Marshall)

I decided to try out a Marshall finally to see what all the fuss was about !

(Rental was free due to some delayed orders, insignificant)

I saw a nice MG50FX, it seemed to be big enough for band practice, gigs, but also good for quiet playing. Decided to take that one home for now.

Pros:
- Makes my Strat roar, gets such big chugging sounds
- Makes the sound so much thicker, and fuller compared to my Frontman 25R (i know its crappy :P don't need comments about it) but its pretty much the same as my Vox VT40+, i prefer the Vox much more.
- Very simple to use
- sounds awesome on clean channel as well
- It can crank, and rock your balls off :P

Cons:
- Weighs a ton
- Only has Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, and Delay for the effects

This is the impression i got after 1.5 - 2 hours of playing it.

Re: Amp Rental Day! (Marshall)

They had a very limited choice of amps, i ordered a foot controller for the Vox i have, and its on special order along with 10-15 other amps from Vox and Marshall, so they had i think 2 or 3 marshalls in store. One was a smaller 15 watt version of the one i got, and cant remember the second one. But a tube amp would've been awesome !

Re: Amp Rental Day! (Marshall)

Yeah. I had an MG30 for a long time. It was my only amp and I used it for both practicing at home and playing gigs. I liked it a lot and I think they're a lot better than their internet reputation would indicate.

However, you've decided to get a feel for a company's products with what is arguably their worst offering.

If you want to see what all the fuss is about, you need to go rent a DSL or something and crank it up with your band.

Re: Amp Rental Day! (Marshall)

That's definitely on the horizon ! :D hope to be able to do that soon.

I wish i played in a hard rock or metal band :P so i can crank the distortion, but nooo we're an alternative rock group :P

Re: Amp Rental Day! (Marshall)

It weighs in at almost 40lbs which is a lot ! my VT40+ only weighs 24lbs, and the VT is a max 60watt amp, and the Marshall, 50 watts.

Re: Amp Rental Day! (Marshall)

An alt rock band can definitely make use of a nice tube amp turned up to that point where it's just starting to get hairy. It's that mid-gain crunch that responds so well to dynamics, if you can rent a Marshall DSL50 or Vox AC30 I think you'll be much more impressed than you are with the MG :D

Re: Amp Rental Day! (Marshall)

Good thing you didn't pay for that! Geeze, what would have they charged you? Those amps are what, like $100 used?

Re: Amp Rental Day! (Marshall)

My VT40+ has a tube in the preamp (12 AX7) im not too educated on tubes, but i know the basics. It has an AC30 in the modelling amps :P but the marshall is what i wanna try ! Iunno about used but new they're about 300$ CND. I have no clue about rental cost. I've rented a tele and this amp, both times free :P the first one was while my Strat was getting set up for the second time (now its perfect).

I find my Vox to be a much better amp.

Ahhhhh, I see. I was wondering.

Really not trying to be rude here but this is the same as running in saying "Hey guys i finally got to drive a vette today!" Then it turns out yeah its a vette its an 82 Chevette.

The amps themselves arent really bad but they are just such a piss poor example of what a great Marshall can be.

Re: Amp Rental Day! (Marshall)

yeah its not the best amp ever, i really like the crunch setting (Red on clean), but the rest arent awesome.

This doesn't spoil my opinion of Marshall, but i hope to get a better idea of a good Marshall when i get my Vox pedal from the store, they're getting some new gear.

I believe the 12ax7 on the valvtronix amps are used in the power section.

Tube-powered VOX Valve Reactor circuit
Every guitar player seeks the power and playability delivered by a tube amp; the fat drive tone, wide dynamic range, subtle picking nuances, and quick response. After painstaking analysis of guitarists’ tastes and preferences, VOX has focused on the importance of the power amp circuit in creating the sonic characteristics long sought from tube amps. The VOX Valve Reactor was developed out of this power amp philosophy. Based on a 12AX7 vacuum tube, the Valve Reactor circuit at the heart of every Valvetronix+ Series amp perfectly reproduces the operation, subtle nuances, and tonal character of a real tube-powered amp.

Re: Amp Rental Day! (Marshall)

The MG50 isn't really representative of what Marshall represents and can do. Heck, neither is my Class 5 for that matter, although it is an English-built "valve" amp.

Nevertheless, welcome to the dark side.

Re: Amp Rental Day! (Marshall)

Yep, grab a tube amp and you'll know the difference. Also 40 or 50W of tube power is enough for Madison Square Gardens....its a different world to solid state.

Re: Amp Rental Day! (Marshall)

I bought the Haze 40. It's a placebo amp until I can afford the real deal. Still it's all tube and not a bad amp at all.

I find it does a good bluesy kind of clean. Not a pristine clean like my Twin, but good fat blues mojo.

The dirt is where it really shines. It really gets pretty close to that 70's rock kind of vibe.

It's also not crazy heavy like my Twin and at 40 watts it's perfect for rehearsals or jams.
