amp shipping

Well I'm going to be unloading a tube amp here shortly and I was wondering what everyones experiences with shipping large amps is in terms of the safest way to go about getting it there in one piece. I've never shipped something this heavy and bulky. I'm trying to avoid the taking it to the UPS store or something as I know they'll destroy me on costs. What carrier did you use? What kind of packing materials? Any general common sense stuff?

Re: amp shipping

I bought a new TRRI in alaska. Had immediate probs with broken/cold solder joints. Local tech told me half of all fenders sent to alaska had problems from shippment; covered under warranty but you'd think they'd just ship in better box. I think I'd remove tubes and pack with styro; inside and out.

Re: amp shipping

I think oversized boxes are the best way to go. When I bought my cab from ebay I got a huge box with the cab in the center surrounded by packing peanuts. The speaker grill was covered with cardboard for protection. I think adding bubble wrap all around the amp would good too. Basically wrap the amp in bubble wrap, add cardboard around all that, then surround it all with about 1 ft all around that with packing peanuts. I know this may sound excessive, but its definitely safer to ship this way. +1 on taking the tubes out then putting it in a separate container.

Re: amp shipping

I think those places just send it the same box as the manufacture does. So they probably aren't as safely shipped.

Re: amp shipping

Double box, oversized box, get the factory box from Guitar Center or something... whatever you do, keep that thing secure as **** and keep a good 3-4 inches on each side from the amp to the outer box.

UPS destroyed the Single Recto headbox - still waiting on the check.
