Amp suggestions please!

I need a new amp. I need it to be bigger and louder and overall I need it to sound way better than the Fender practice amp that I'm using right now. I play metal. Can anyone suggest a good sized, good sounding amp for metal that doesn't cost TOO much? Thank you.

Re: Amp suggestions please!

I'd suggest a Line 6 Spider II. You can get some great heavey metal tones, and they sound amazing with any high end guitar.

Re: Amp suggestions please!

That sounds good, only doesn't the Spider ll have built in amp models and stuff? I own a Line 6 POD and I dunno, wouldn't the POD sorta be a waste then? Like an extra set of amp models that I wouldn't need since the Spider ll has them already built in? I'm just asking.

Re: Amp suggestions please!

The POD offers WAY MORE flexibility than the Spider. It would be sort of redundant, but it wouldn't be overkill. Even some of the features that are included on both pieces can be fine tuned on the Pod. Whereas on the Spider, you can only adjust the parameters so much....

I am in the same boat as you, at least in that I am shopping for a new amp. If you dont want the bells and whistles of the Spider, check out the Fender Deville and the Crate V-30. I prefer tube amps to solid state, anyway. This two amps allow you to reach the intended tone of the tubes without blowing the windows out! The Deville is an all-tube 40 watt 1x12 combo. check out the link

It is plenty loud, I jammed both yesterday while doing my shopping. The Finder has great sounds on all 3 channels, and has an FX loop or you can run the Pod through the input.

The Crate V-30 is a Class-A all-tube 30 watt (as the name implies). It is also very loud for a bedroom/practice amp. It has two channels, and a 10db boost.

Both amps have great tube sounds and are loud enough to jam, but quiet enough to reach thier best tones in a home environment.

Hope this helps, and Good Luck with your search!!!

Thank you very much.

And also, I guess I'll ask this here and now since I've been wondering lately, but what's the difference between a tube amp and a solid state amp?

Re: Amp suggestions please!

Buy used...in new condition if possible. Do not buy new! Your money will go twice as far if you buy used gear.

I don't know what you have to spend, but a used Peavey 5150 might be nice. They go for around $450 or so on Ebay without speakers. Might be a little steeper than you want to spend.

Tubes use tubes.

Solid State uses transistors.

About $200. I think I might just go with the Spider ll after all. :)

Thanks again.

a 5150 combo would be real nice for metal like Lew said. here's one on ebay right now: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=38076&item=3766636868&rd=1

does your current amp have an effects loop ? if so, you can run it with the POD. what's your budget ?

Re: Amp suggestions please!

Yeah, the 5150 would kick major ass if you can afford it. GO TUBE!
